I've got an interesting question and story. I've got an '89 bronco II with automatic locking hubs for 4WD. While I was on my way to Vermont from Maryland for a snowboarding vacation my wheel and hub assembaly on the right front decided take a hike while i was going 70mph on the New York through way. It ended up costing me $1200 in parts to fix it and two days of vacation stuck in New York. Today I noticed a recall on my Bronco about a hub pin not being installed wich might cause the hub and wheel to come off while driving and causing an accident. Witch is exactly what happened to me. Is there something I can do to maybe get ford to remburse me for the parts cost at least. Thank you for any info any might supply.
I also have an '89 B II w/ auto 4x4 hubs, I did a search of the recall list for '89 B II's and came up w/ nothing. You may find something in the TSB's, I haven't gone through them yet.
Having just replaced my entire front brake system, I can tell you I'm less than impressed w/ the hub design. I think what may have happened to your truck, is the last time the hub was apart the "key" that locks the spindle nut was not installed. Without that "key" the nut will be free to spin.
On a side note, I love how Ford doesn't sell the O-ring for the hub seperately, you have to buy the whole hub assembly for about $200-250
