I have a 1997 F250 with the 460 with 129000 on the clock. I bought the truck a few months ago and just noticed a knock under load at highway speeds. I am curious if this is could be solved with a higher octane fuel. My 89 aerostar runs without any rattling with mid grade gas, but you drop it to the cheap stuff and she rattles like mad under load. Any insights would be appreciated as I am new to this engine.
I’m sure higher octane gas would help.
But, it should run on 87 just fine, first check the timing the previous owner may have advanced the timing 2 or 3 degrees to get more power.
Just put it to what the catalyst sticker says.
Or the knock sensor may be bad, if it has one... not sure if it does.
To test that, hook up the timing light, and tap the block with a hammer near the KS, the timing should retard briefly.
Hey not a problem....I’m the only guy at our dealership that has a timing light!!!!
Ok first you must locate the SPOUT connector; it will be near the wiring on the ignition module. I think it’s on the driver’s side lower inside fender.
It’s a grey plug you pull out of a connector.
When you pull this it takes the computer out of the picture so you can set base timing.
Now take the timing gun inductive clip and put it on the NO# 1 plug wire
Hook up the + an -
Now point it at the crank damper, and timing indicator bolted to the block.
Make sure it’s at 10 degrees advanced.
If you need any more info about this please let me know.
