I have a feeling that this may be a common topic. I bought truck new in March. The engine started knocking after a couple of thousand miles. Now at 8400 miles it rattles all the time under load unless I floor it. I took it back to the dealer who reprogrammed the computer, but no improvement. Any ideas?

You definitely have that tensioner issue. Not that I plan on owning that OHCer 4.0 to hear firsthand, but I did diagnose a 2.0 Zetec Contour with a cracked t-belt resulting from a rattling/very loose tensioner. When revved, that rattle would quiet down.
It amazes me, not that the stealership is lousy, but that somehow a computer reflashed was going to magically make some clanging, rattling noise disappear....
I suppose it could be the tensioner rattling. I'll suggest it to the technician. This tech is a friend of mine and is pretty good, but I was certain it was spark knock and had other minor things for him to check at the same time, so he may not have spent as much time diagnosing the problem (as he will when I take it back). I'll post the outcome.
I bought a 2004 Ranger with a 4.0 about a month ago. It has a terrible pinging problem and it first occured with less than 500 miles. I have not taken it in yet because I haven't had time. Overall, I am very disappointed with my new Ranger!
Bought a used 03/4.0 manual 4x4 recently and the engine runs like a champ. It only has 11,000 miles on it now, but there is absolutely no hint of pinging, knocking or any of those bad noises I have heard before. It also gets very good gas mileage. And, we live and drive hard in high altitude New Mexico. I did have a 1998 4.0 that made bad noises - dealer rebuilt the engine under original factory warranty, it just kept knocking. Frankly, I believe that the dealers - if pushed hard enough - will fix these kinds of problems and/or replace the engine. Sure wish you the best of luck - hang in there.

Have 2001 Ranger. Dealer replaced timing belt tensioner at 2000 miles.
Start knocking again exactly at 2000 RPM under load. 2050 RPM knock dessapear. Any ideas?
