Spark knock

Hi. I was told the rattle i am hearing coud be spark knock. It is at around the same rpms usually. Truck was built 9-25-04. Is my truck affected by the spark knock issue? What is the TSB number? It is around 2,500 rpms under any kind of load, and is kind of a buzzing rattly noise. Engine hits 2500 then a moment later it starts the buzzing. When cold it isn't as pronounced. Sometimes on cold days you can bearly even make it out. it stops around 3,000 or so rpms. Sounds like it is around the tranny tunnel though. any help?? thanks

As Billy ask, which engine do you have & it would also be helpful if we knew which tranny & under what driving conditions you hear the noise, ie just reving the engine without load, or on a up hill pull, or mild or vigorous acceleration, or steady cruise, or while towing or carrying a load????

Any service or repairs just prior to this happening????

Did this come about slowly over time, or suddenly after some event????

The noise being a buzing sound & it being being down around the tranny tunnel, IMHO doesn't really sound like a spark knock description to me, at least I wouldn't expect a spark knock to be coming from that area.

Maybe something like a exhaust system noise, like a loose cat converter heat shield, like the one for & close to the tranny, or maybe a loose bracket or inspection plate around the tranny or bell housing!!!!

Just some more questions & ideas for consderation.

I agree that your description sounds more like an exhaust rattle. The truck sounds pretty new, is it still under warranty? If so, let the dealer figure it out.

Based on your description, I'd say loose catalytic converter heat shield. Just crawl under there and give it a "tap".

Engine is a 4.0 and i think the tranny is a 5r55w...maybe not though...that might be explorers...or 5r75w...too many numbesrs...here....its an automatic...thats limits it down. 4x4 4.10 rear ratio. It does it from ~2,500 to 3,100 or so rpms and is buzzy... and doesnt stop unless the accelerator is released, and/or rpms aren't in that range. I got under and tapped around and wasn't able to locate it. The cat shields seem okay, welds look good, however, i may have overlloked it. The dealer put chassis ears on it and couldn't find it. It is really annoying. Still under warranty. The noise has been on it for a while. It wasn't sudden or a result of anything...TMK. I am the only driver for it, and it has 2,000 on it. Anytime the truck stays around the depicted rpms, the noise is heard. VERY hard to recreate in N or P though. If i am accelerating fast, then the noise is very brief if at all, but accelerating slowly then you can hear it....would a sound clip help??

OK, good feedback powerstroke.

On my 99 4.0L 5spd auto, there is a exhaust heat shield that snaps on to the tranny pan, on the passengers side, that would be a good candidate for a rpm range buzz, if not fastened up properly.

Also check your tranny dipstick & make sure it's seated fully.

A sound clip is a good idea IMHO.

Can you have a helper rev the engine up while you inspect the area where the heat shields are located as well as any other source of the noise?

I will guess it's the muffler shield (if it has one).
I have removed 3 of them, one on a 94 explorer, 2 on 98 Rangers. All rattled like that. They all had the oem muffler that stands on edge, the shield is on the inboard side only. I have a 94 too but it had an aftermarket muffler on it so not sure if it had the same?

Hmmmm, that sounds awfully suspicious of something I'm experiencing. I don't hear it until I downshift. Thanks guys, that helps me out. I'll have to check on that.
