after playing around with me van last weekend that i got for 300 dollars i noticed that the power steering pump and the rack are leaking fluid and make a bunch of noise. i tried some powersteering fluid with stop leak in it to try to slow it down not sure its done anything yet so i am asking where is a good place to buy a rack and a powersteering pump. thanks..
I highly recommend www.kragen.com. You can order on line, pay for it on line, and go pick up the parts at the local Schucks, Checker or Kragen. As it turns out, autopartsgiant.com does offer the same thing for a lower price, so you can e-mail customer service after the purchase, send a link, and they will reimburse your credit card the difference. But remember, everything has to be done on line, except the pickup part.
I think Kragen charges over $140 for the A-1 Cardone rebuilt rack while autopartsgiant charges $75 for the same thing. I bought from Kragen just because they have the local pickup option, and I got refunds for the entire difference in prices.
Good luck
P.S. Where in Idaho are you? I used to live in Idaho Falls, and I still go fishing back there every year.
i live in glennsferry. down on the snake. just moved back here from jefferson maine. i use to live in idaho falls. like 10 years ago very nice town. thanks for the info also.
I replaced the steering rack on my van and the power steering pump about a year ago and the prices I said in my last reply was what I payed for them at discount autos, now known as advance auto parts.
Alright Copper "Kragen Auto Parts"? Man you're making me miss home!
Replacing the rack is an easy job. I would almost say do it, because it will be the easiest one you'll ever do.
I've done it several times. It won't always eliminate the whining noise in the pump (even when you replace the pump), but it will quiet it down some. Noisey steering pumps are an Areostar trait.
I've had the "joy" of replacing the rack on my '97 A* twice in the past five months. Why? The first remanufactured rack started leaking 3 weeks after the install. Down side, getting to "argue" with bolts tightened by 190K of driving. Up side, I'm very good at it after all my practice.
Bottom line, I agree that changing out the rack on an A* is cheap and easily accomplished by a shadetree (or in my case, gravel drive...) mechanic.
