craptastic power steering pump
thoughts?
if the whole lip of that pulley shears off in my second attempt, is there any way to remove the pulley?
installed the new power steering pump (remanufactured AC Delco)
works, but sounds worse than it did before (facepalm)
I put ATF in my last pulley, and the only stuff I had laying around to fill up this one was royal purple max ATF. Would changing fluid to mercon or anything else help with the sound? It seems quieter than it was when the pump is not under load, but it groans like crazy when the pump is under full load (parallel parking stuff). I also noticed lots of small bubbles on the dipstick when i unscrewed the filler cap. Change the fluid? To what? Live with the fact that I spent the better part of a week making my Aerostar a bit crappier?
guys?
With that being said, the quietest pump on the market would be the genuine Ford replacement pump. I do realize that they may not be available for your application, it's just that most aftermarket Ford pumps make more noise than what gets taken off.
Did you flush the lines and rack with fresh Mercon ATF several times to clean out all the old varnish, dirt and crud before putting in the RP?
I've run mine the last 20 years with Mobil 1 ATF and a shot of Lubeguard. Started with a fresh cleanout flush. Flush and changed every 30k or so. These systems run hot, build up lots of lube breakdown varnish in the rack and pinion valves and the pump gears. Old hoses and seals break down internally, all that crud plugs up the valves and pump.
Had to run mine dry for 30 miles to get home 10 years ago when line broke. Refilled with M1, still quiet as a mouse. Credit to the M1 and Lubeguard.
Put an inline filter in from auto tranny shop in the return line.
Also switch the inline cooler to the OEM larger auto tranny cooler in front of the radiator and put in a super size auto tranny cooler replacement. Prevents ATF breakdown.
Put a soup can over the PS cap, prevents drain water from above and road splash for going into pump reservoir. Major cause of these pumps and racks failing, rust in system. Old rusty rack/pinion will eat out new pump in minutes
