Just picked up an '87 BII and one of the first things I noticed is that I cannot lock the shoulder seatbelt straps even if I yank on them real hard. I'm guessing this is not "normal."
Any suggestions or comments from those who've had the problem?
I love it when I can answer my own question...but am embarassed when it comes from reading the Owner's Manual. The OM clearly states the seatbelt locking mechanism is only activated during a bump of 5mph or higher and that no amount of "yanking" will activate the lock. Nice to know, but how do I check them for operability? Does the plunger switch on the right side of the driver's door (not for interior lights) part of that system perhaps? Maybe I'll just pull that panel cover off the seatbelt retractor and see...check all connections while I'm there.
try putting the seatbelt on and start driving (maybe not on a freeway) and just slam on the brakes and jerk the seat belt (dont rely on it to keep you from hitting the steering wheel incase it doesnt work)
B2Guy has a good idea, but if your truck is like mine it doesn't like being slammed on the brakes. The rear end likes to slide around under heavy breaking. Maybe I have a brake balance problem or something but its always been like that. So make sure you don't try out your belts for real while you are testing them (don't lose it and have to hit something to find out if the belts work).
