i have 2 .22 rifles a marlin 70pss which is a ****y gun, it has problems shooting led bullets, it only wants to shoot brass and copper ones
mcmurry .22 shells go 1.5 miles but drop off at about 150 yards
dont use a 9mm, in the movies they seem alot quieter than they really are
all ull do is have the cops called on u but
those cb shots are made for that exact perpose, scaring of critters but not killing them
No autoloading pistol will function with the little "CB" rounds, but you can single shot them, To "single shot" the "CB" round you would need to open the slide and drop a round into the chamber then close the slide and your ready to shoot, you would be dinner by the time you needed to get a second shot off!
I have never heard of a hunter needing to guard against such quantity of wild predator - you must live in the one place in America where they all live, which is probably the reason for the rest of us never seeing them. If the predator is about, in quantity, the deer are long gone, or eaten. It is probably the predator that is scaring the deer away, long before your long gun speaks.
Having such an amount of predators around is what scares the deer away; To ensure that the deer will be there, to shoot at, you must first get rid of the critters that eat deer - hunt them, and have fun pitting your wits against them, then when their blood trail dies down, the deer will be back - maybe.
I am out in the dark, often. In forests, hidden places and other such lonely haunts, and I very rarely see a predator at all. If I do, I have bear mace, that will squirt 10 - 15 feet, which will get rid of any of the critters I have encountered. My need for silence is just as, or more, important than yours, as my prey usually shoots back - whenever humans gather to be inhuman, they defend themselves violently.
added, on edit:
It would be somewhat unwise to use any 22 handgun to defend against large predators - they would most likely just be injured, and therefore more dangerous it shot with such an unsuitable weapon. The cranial lobes of such creatures are quite dense, making headshots with such a caliber pointless, and body shots would take somewhat longer than you would have, to kill them. Trauma would be minimal, so the animal would be in a state of defense, not a state of shock, so would attack the source of the trouble.... you. Coyote would probably run, Wildcat, Lynx, and Cougar would not. loud noise will drive them off, pain will only make them wilder.

I've got some neighborhood cats I'd like to scare off from pooping in the flowerbeds right outside my front door. Should I go for the 9mm or the 22cal.
Best thing to get animals to leave your yard alone is to boil chili flakes in some oil. Use a good cup or more of red chili flakes to a quart of oil. Let it cool down with the chili flakes in it. Filter the flakes out and spray the area you want to deny to animals with the chili-oil mixture using a hand pump sprayer. The oil may damage the leaves of tender plants so avoid getting it onto plants. Spraying the soil, mulch, etc will do the trick. Wear rubber gloves when handling the oil. Cover your eyes when spraying the oil. Wash your hands off VERY well with a soap made to cut oils and grease before touching your face. I have done the same mixture using water-chili flakes but find using water as a base only gives a few days protection at best.
As to the question about .22 pistols. If you can find a reasonably priced older Colt's Woodsman (or the varients of it) they are very well worth picking up. If want something you can buy retail I would suggest the Ruger Mark II. Although I like the Government Model very much I must admit the short bull barrel ( 4 or 5 inchs) feels superb in the hand.
I don't know about your area but some states don't allow semi-auto pistols for hunting. It doesn't matter what else your armed with many game wardens only pay attention to whats illegal. I always carry a Ruger single six usually with the magnum cylinder in for just that reason. The shot shells work well especially when its still warm enough for snakes to be out, like now during dove season.
Anyone here that has a P22 had a problem with it hanging up. Mine has always had a problem wiht this. The faster you shoot the rounds off the less likely it is to jam. I Walther and they said i was using cheap bullets, i used expensive ones for about 400 rounds with nearly the same results.

i wonder how much that costs ^^^^

i can drive into my field late in the day and there will be a herd of whitetail of deer wiht about 25 head in there and we still have panthers (ya panthers they live in the usa to) moutain lions, bob cats, wolves and other creatures that **** me off , oh and i seem to walk up and my dog gets sprayed this one freaking skunk every 2 weeks

My dad used to propose we uncork a .458 Winchester Magnum on 'em. He figured the evidence would, uh, vaporize.
The 22 will make enough noise to scare deer away anyway and it probably would PO anything you shoot. Could also lead to a festering wound that could cause the animal to become a real problem for the locals. A 22 CB or most any 22 will not "stun" an animal, it will penetrate the skin and maybe bone and cause problems for you right away or for others later. If you must defend yourself, shoot to kill or put down. stunning is for Startrek movies.
If you really need to shoot a cat in self defense I would want something more reliable and be very selective about using it. If you just want to scare a curious critter away I would go with a big can of pepper spray or a high power pellet pistol, Crossman or is it Daisy has a Walther PP look alike that is very handy and shoots pretty well. I bought one of these for the wife to plink dogs during her walk, and it has been very effective. Most dogs run at just the sound of the pellet wizzing by, maybe big cats will too, but don't bet your life on it.
If you still want a 22, I really like my old Ruger Mark II I bought in 1984, standard 4 inch barrel. Works great, decent accuracy for a plinker. For a nicer gun, I like my Browning Buckmarks. The two that I have are too long barreled for self defense but the Buckmarks come in shorter barrels than the 11 inchers I have for target shooting.
As for your idea on using CBs for defense, be sure that they will cycle any auto action you plan to buy. I bet the CBs don't cycle most of the automatic 22s out there. I know my three 22s don't cycle reliably with some cheap long rifle Chinese and Russian ammo. I would bet they won't even budge with a CB cap.
