im thinking of buying a pistol cuz every time i go hunting, i haft to walk to my deer stand in the night from my house which is prolly a 8th a quater of a mile away, and im having problems with panthers, coyotes, bobcats, and mountain lions, those things walk up on me all the time and i haft to shoot them with my big gun which scares my deer away b4 i get to my stand.
so i was thinking of gettiing a semi auto .22 pistol that will shoot regular bullets and cbs, so i can just stun the animal that im having the problem with, stunning them instead of killing them. most cb bullets sound like a pellet gun
i did find one from s&w that is awesome, its camo and its a .22lr
I have the same gun that Mike Dubya does. Very handy, accurate, and best of all, they have easy to load magazines. If I get another .22 pistol, it will be a Walther P22 with both 4" & 6" barrels. It would be nice if they made it in .22 Magnum though.
sorry to hi-jack but... The p-22 is an awesome gun along with it's big brother the p-99 (9mm, 40s&w, 45acp) that's what I plan to carry carry after the police academy.

Hey! Me too! Ruger Mark II, blued, w/ bull barrel, but not the stainless one with the slab-sided barrel & funny target grips. Points great, recoil with that heavy barrel is like a pellet gun. Sights hardly move off target when the shot breaks. I use it to break up my .45 practice. It shoots *waaay* better than I can.
I've heard nothing but good things about the P22, and the Beretta NEOS. They are pretty cheap too... I can get a Ruger MKII for $249, or a P22 for the same price, and its got two barrels... I'm not sure what the NEOS is going for... heck, I might have to get both....
Do you guys have the trigger problem too? My trigger pull varies from shot to shot, and on occasion it just plain won't go off... I might need to take a file to the sear and clean it up...
Your gonna protect yourself from panthers, mountian lions, and coyotes with a .22 handgun because your big gun scares away your prey. I'm not sure that .22 pistol is enough to keep you at the very top of the food chain.
Might suggest a 40 s&w or Colt 45 with subsonic rounds. Not sure....but they sure have more stopping power......and may not be right, but I think those big subsonic rounds might be close to the niose level of that .22 pistol.
I'd much rather loose my dear, than loose my arm.
A'm no avid hunter.....so I'm just making this up........but its seems logical to me.
A .22 cal is a noise maker as well and will scare game away just as any "louder" gun would do. I would not even take a chance and shoot anything above a rabbit with one in fear of pi$$ing off a larger animal, ie: mountain lion, panther, coyote. Wounding them is not the answer and neither is a mere .22 cal. use what you are hunting with it will get the job done and not leave a wild "wounded" angry animal in the woods to attack some other hunter or hiker, farmer. I once shot a rabid raccoon with a .22 and it took 7 shots to subdue the gritter. just my .02
If you'r just looking to scare something away, a .22 will probably work. As for the noise, the .22 has a higher pitched "crack" sound, but if you're over a hill, or if there is a lot of woods between your stand and where you shoot, then it may not disturb your hunting to much. I have been hunting and had people shooting all around and still seen deer sneaking through the woods. Not running full out and noisy, but doing a slow "ghost" sneak through the woods. And if you're just trying to scare something, you won't be shooting it. Interestingly enough, years ago I read a story on hunting mountain lions, and they used dogs to tree it and then shot it with a .22 in the head. The .22 did not mess up the hide. In any event, remember that a .22 is lethal out to a mile and to beware of the direction you shoot it.
I've got some neighborhood cats I'd like to scare off from pooping in the flowerbeds right outside my front door. Should I go for the 9mm or the 22cal.
My Ruger is the stainless government target model (6-7/8 bull barrel, target sights). I gave it a trigger job (very easy to do) and put on some Pachmayer wrap-around rubber grips. The slick trick was changing out the front sight for one from a Ruger Single Six. Piece of cake, no machining, and the height is the same. The difference is it's rounded, so that you can get it out of a holster. It took a few years of experimenting, but I now have a very nice shooting machine.
