Power steering?

I have a '65 f250 with a 352 in it, but no power steering. How hard is it to add something like that? I had heard that they added it to the later models in the year, so is it something I can just bolt on (i hope)?

Welcome, made the upgrade on my 65 after 20 plus years of manual steering, what an improvement. Fortunately, came across this forum where you will find warehouse of knowledgeable and helpful members. If you run a search you should find great deal of info on the upgrade. May want to try running search under 'power steering for 65 f100'. Another member posted same topic couple months back.

Ideally, if you can find a donor truck 73-79 and remove all the p/steering equipment, pulleys, brackets, and the engine perch on the drivers side. Believe same brackets will fit FE series engines but more knowledgeable member can address that issue. If you go with the later model steering box, fomoco box, they are longer which means you will either have to shorten the original steering column by couple inches, or take later model steering column off donor truck. I have floor shift on my 65 so column was not an issue. You can go with a Bendix p/steering box and the column is not an issue. It has same dimensions as the original manual box. Suggest if considering using Bendix box review pro's and con's. I obtained couple of Bendix boxes but decided to go with the later model box. If you get the later model column you should be able to remove the mounting bracket on the original and install on the later model column. There was a recent post where member used spacers, and longer bolts and used the same bracket that comes with later model column. Fortunately, do not have to make sense of this attempt at explaining the upgrade. Post if you have any questions.

good luck,
dave

Hi Sam, Welcome to FTE .

Dave offered great advice. 76 was the last year the FE was offered even though the body style continued to 79. Should you not require a 250 you can use 150 parts. The differences are in springs, axles, etc.

Buy your donor and keep it until you are finished converting. You might do like me and sell parts and the donor becomes free.

John
