oil usage question

my 88 bronco 2 was sitting in a parking lot for the better part of 3 years the guy that i bought it from told me the oil pump was no good. well to make a long story short after taking it to the mechanic to be repaired he found the motor to be very sludged up and showed me the pickup screen was very cloged. the truck runs like a champ now. he advised me against using detergent oils or synthetic oils because it would break down the sludge and we would get the same problem. im curious though if i changed the oil on a regular basis or more frequent than regular basis what are the odds of this happening? wouldnt i be doing the motor a favor by breaking the sludge down and cleaning it out or should i just use a regular oil, not worry bout the sludge as its not affecting anything and continue to enjoy the ride

You couldn't cut the sludge with kerosene. Use regular detergent motor oil and change about every 5000. Watch the temp gauge. It sounds like it might run a little warm or the owner very seldom changed the oil.
