My 97 4.6 EB has 160,000 miles, in that time I replaced...

An Oxygen Sensor, Plug Wires (#4 misfire from leaking heater hose), Belts and Hoses, Power Steering Pump, Vapor Management Valve, Lower Ball Joints, Tie Rods. At 100k, I changed transmission filter and oil out of guilt.

Most of these things are just normal wear and tear. I'm not the easiest on a vehicle.

I run a K&N Air Filter, and Mobil 1 Oil in the crankcase.

ITS A SHAME THAT THE OLDER EXPY'S ARE MORE RELIABLE THAN THE NEWER ONES.
Not according to Consumer Reports. In 2001 the Expedition made remarkable improvements in many categories. The first year (1997) was the worst year, and 2001 was the first year with no black in the circles. Considering the horror stories I've read about other Expy owners, I've been extremely fortunate. Front disk pad wear has been the worst thing for me. Otherwise I've had very little trouble with mine, and it only a few thousand miles from 100K.

If 1997 was the worst year then The new ones should be FANTASTIC! I have a 97 with 170,000 on the clock. I have never had ine seconds trouble out of it other than normal wear items. I had a few gremlins show up about a month ago but they went away with no return.

'99 XLT 5.4, 65,000 Miles. Blown tranny, took the Radiator (trans cooler attached) and aux trans cooler at 60,000 miles. Tie rod ends bad at 50,000 miles. IAC bad at 55,000 miles. Switch for electric mirrors bad. Windshield cracked for no apparent reason (no chips in windshield). Blowing fuse for A/C, blend door and back up lights and no one can figure out why. I have 4 small children. This is my third, and last, Ford. My last mini-van got worse mileage than this truck so we are going to stick with large SUV's. Does Toyota make Sequoia's in the U.S.? My Expy was made in Canada. Never again.

1997 Exp. 5.4 liter, 108,000 miles. Basically have had ZERO problems.
Oh no, now i have hexed myself. Engine will probably blow tomorrow.
Seriously, I have been really happy with it so far. Probably bring it in for
its first tune up shortly. I don't think I will trade it in for a newer one anytime soon.

2000Expy, am I understanding correctly...(more)...

It's not delicate and dainty. It's built Ford Tough, ok? We expect this thing to run even when abused in a tough environment. That's why it was purchase and why it was built. It lit up like a Christmas tree and was a piece of crap. That doesn't mean all Expeditions are, but the guy deserves fair treatment at the dealer. They shouldn't be cleaning his clock for problems that shouldn't even occur. I'll bet those computers are designed tested in a tub of mud in a freezer under vibration, to see how they will hold up. How much brains does it take to hook up a computer to diagnose it? We're not asking the technician to run an oscilliscope, it's a diagnostic computer. They are not diagnosing anything for free, and no one wants them to. But charging $90 to tell you it will cost you $350 is nuts.
...that you're saying a used vehicle's treatment by its' orig owner has no bearing whatsover on its future reliability/performance...just because its a Ford? Am I taking this out of context somehow? I mean, I'm willing to bet there's not a person here who couldn't intentionally abuse a brand new Ford truck to the point where its future reliability is compromised. Ford or no Ford, they're still machines I also think there's a difference between "using something hard" and "abusing it".

I agree that everyone should be treated fairly at the dealer, but remember, dealers are in business to make money. Some do it fairly, some don't. I'd fully expect any dealer who's gonna' charge me $90 to diagnose a problem is damn-well gonna' deduct that $90 from my bill should I choose to have them fix it. If I don't have them work on it, I'll gladly pay their $90.

Just my $.02

All you people who say "I'll never own a Ford again" just don't let the door hit you in the *** on the way out. I am so tired of hearing that rant. Every manufacturer gets it. I am not going to even try to defend Ford to you. Just hit the road and good luck with that Tahoe.

Interesting how different databases come up with different conclusions. MSN's auto reliability rating show '97-'02 with basically good ratings- 2000 was the only real exception, and '02 was the most reliable. '02 is the latest data- they require 3 year field history. I don't know who they are using as a source, though.
