Hello I am perplexed and I hope anyone who has experienced this type of thing may be able to help. Every time I go to start my 89 Ford F 150 inline 6, the starter will not stop working even after it starts, It makes a real bad grinding sound.. I replaced the starter, selenoid, the key cylinder, any ideas?
Are you sure that the starter still has power going to it? Mine use to hang up on the ring gear after I replaced starters. I solved the problem by placing a shim between the starter and the bell housing. Better fix it soon or you will be replacing a starter and a ring gear.
I have already removed the "S" terminal wire once the truck started and it did not affect it, it still grinded.. I have replaced the ignition cylinder yesterday. Also I I tried my own test I removed the coil wire so the truck would not start then I turned the key and it seems as though when the key is let go the starter stops. I would think if the short is in the key feeds the starter would keep going but it does not. Maybe that test is not accurate I just don't know..
To add some details with my truck, the owner had a problem with the clutch pedal apparently he had pressed so hard down on the pedal that he cracked the metal bracket near the steering column this makes the need to press the clutch pedal even harder in order to start the truck. I am wondering if this is affecting the ignition secondary switch on the steering column... The one that is under the dash and on top of the column.. it is hard to get to... Anyway I was told by a advance auto guy that that switch is affected by the actual ignition turning which in turn sends the power the right way I am thinking could the power switch be stuck in one spot? Before I tear into it I want to be sure because that is a big job..
Fixed!!! It was the starter... It needed to be shimmed with some washers 2 per bolt.. The weird thing was the old starter worked fine for years since I bought the truck then it just happened thursday where it was grinding with the flywheel because it was too close then when I put the new one on exactly the same as the old one that ground too.. until I shimmed it.. This was one weird experience.. Anyway I have new parts which did not cost too much.. new key cylinder, key switch, selonoid, and starter but I had to buy a starter...
Thanks alot for all your attempts to help me guys!
For what it's worth.......and even though you've fixed your problem.....
I had a similar experience with some Napa starters.
The parts guy sold me a "manual transmission" starter for my 94 instead of one for an "automatic tranny"----which is what I have.
The length of the nose on the "manual trans" starter was/is too short to engage with the flywheel on my E4OD.
It almost sounds like you have an "automatic trans" starter in a "manual trans" rig and had to shim the darned thing to get it to work right !!!
Maybe you right Bob... I specifically asked the guy at Advanced to check again just to make sure before I left.. I am glad it worked out it was driving me crazy..
