Somthing big goes clunk when I put the truck in reverse. Not as noticeable in drive and it also happens when going into 2nd if I'm not on the gas...like in a corner. When I stomp the gas in drive, it goes and shifts good.
carrier bearing is reasonbly new, probably less than 5000 miles.
4WheelParts just installed a Detroit locker in the Dana 60. You think they would have said something if it was in bad shape??
Guess I better look at the U-Joints...I'm also worried about axle wrap...that's what it feels like a little bit...Not typical on a street tire 2wd...but then nothing else about this truck is typical.. Might have something to do with 500+lb-ft of torqe and drag tires :-)
I'm sure you know this , but that locker is gonna make some noise & provide some added stresses to the U-joints.( especially on turns). If it ain't the locker it's most likely U-joints.
Years ago, I had a '52 that would make a similar sound when I put it in reverse. It was a crack between each one of the flywheel bolts. Dropped the tranny , removed the flywheel bolts and the center fell out.
The 69 F250 I have, that dad bought new, has always done the clunk in reverse. It hasn't gotten any worse in 240,000 miles. All my buddie's Dads trucks with the Dana 60, did it, so I've just thought it was normal.
I thought they came from the factory with the clunk built in... or maybe it was an option, my Custom Cab has it
It may just be that I've got a lot of motor, but my big clunk is often accompanied by a slight tire chirp!
the more I think about it, I may just need to adjust my rear brakes....the whole back end may be moving around while the front brakes are holding the truck..hmmm....
