My 1985 F-150 clunks when I let off the gas and when I give it alittle gas. It's not very a noticable clunk when I step on the gas though. How can it be fixed? Anybody know what the problem is?
It actually seems like there is slop somewhere. Because I can be going slowly, and put on the gas and let it off and it will just keep clunking back and forth. At first I thought it was my frame and body moving around, but I dont know.
check your u-joints and drive line then check tranny mount sounds like a drive line slack remember to block the wheels and put the truck into neutral when you check the joints use a bar to try and move the tranny tail shaft to check the tranny mount

Probably rear axle. Many 73-96 Fords "clunk".----9 inch & 8.8 more noticably.
Ring & pinion needs adjusting or bad pinion bearing are likely causes.
How do I know what size my rear end is? How would I adjust the Ring and pinion? Will letting it stay the way it is make things worse, or can I just leave it alone for now?
I checked the U-joints, and replaced the transmission mount because it was alittle squishy... but it still clunks! How do I adjust the ring and pinion? There seems to be alittle extra slack in the rear end when I turn the wheels by hand.
Unless you are in the business the R&P stuff should be left to the pro's. I think the adjustment is made with shims on the pinion gear. When adjustments are made the meshing of the gears needs to be checked. If the clunk is from the R&P you probably need the whole thing rebuilt anyhow which will most likely set you back $300-600.
Nobody mentioned the bearing in the tailshaft of the transmission... that the driveshaft slides into?
I replaced mine after replacing the universals, which were bad, and the tranny mount, ditto bad. There was still a slight clunk. New bearing and seal fixed it. She's running fine, and not leaking anything anywhere.
My dad says that since its not leaking, it cant be a Ford anymore.

1983 F-150 351W C6 3:55 axle.
Rear Main Seal Leaking???? Mine does, But I'll have to say thats the only leak I have.....
1985 F-150 4X4 351 4V H.O.
mopar... I'm not sure if my rear mean seal is actually leaking.. I thought it was at first, but there was also alot of oil leaking out of my valve covers, oil sending unit, and oil pan. So i replaced the gaskets for the valve covers last weekend and installed a new sending unit. and retightened the oil pan bolts.. hopefully that will end the leaks!!
I don't know if my rear differential is leaking though now, but there appears to be some fresh oil at the bottom of it.
