The reason the marine manufactures quit using Ford motors was 2 fold. Fords production of the HD blocked engines for marine use was limited by their plant and GM would sell their engines for next to nothing and had almost unlimited supply capability from their plants. This told to me by factory reps for both OMC(and now also Volvo after OMC's bankruptcy) and Mercrusier. Ford wasn't really interested at the time in what they termed a "limited market" and didn't want to invest in more engine manufacturing capability. Also reverse rotation wasn't an issue as most reverse rotation with twins was done in the tranny or outdrive(Volvo drives were always able to turn either way, also the Merc Bravo drives and the new Cobra drives which are really Volvos anyway) and all of it is done that way now.
