Were there any high output or special 360 engines used in the F-Series. I have a 71 F-250 4X4 with a 360 2bbl that has been in the family. Recently my uncle told me that in it's day, it was the fastest truck he had ever driven. Why would this be? I have not been able to drive it yet(Body Cancer). Is this a special motor, are all 360 just fast, or does he not know what he is talking about? Thanks.
There is nothing special about it other than its a ford. Its just a good solid design....and at that time all the other trucks were probobly just turds running small blocks. My 360 still amazes me and some other people too that thought that it wasnt big enough to be quick.
The 360 I had in my '74 was a torque monster - no problem going through mud up to the tops of the 33" tires in stock trim (3rd gear on the 435NP and 4LOW on the 205NP).
My brother who bought it brand-new said he had it up to 120 a few times - must have been 6000RPM being it had no overdrive - I think he embellished
My 390 would spin the tires too much - nice show, though
I have yet to figure out why Mercruiser ( and Volvo-Penta ) use only Chevy blocks for their powerplants... I do like the fact that Mercruiser is getting 1100 hp out of a little 557ci chevy big block... Even has a Warranty!!!
What does the Mazda kid say? ZOOM ZOOM?! F-in right!
Designed and developed by Mercury Racing Engineering.
Handcrafted in Mercury Racing's four-cycle Race Shop.
557-cubic inch tall deck cast iron cylinder block featuring five main bearings with stud fastened steel main bearing caps.
Twin-screw Lysholm super chargers require less power than traditional single-screw roots blowers.
Super chargers feature closed lubrication with sight plug for added protection and enhanced durability.
Super charger induction noise levels are controlled by twin carbon fiber Helmholtz air inlet resonators.
Twin flame arrestors act also as air filters, keeping the engine's air induction system clean and efficient.
Eight ignition coils, one per cylinder, eliminates spark plug fouling.
The SmartCraft PCM 03 controller continuously monitors the amount of boost needed to provide consistent 1075 horsepower in any condition or environment and varies boost accordingly.
The SmartCraft PCM 03 microprocessor optimizes fuel, spark timing and knock control for each cylinder independently, enhancing engine running quality, performance and durability.
An all-new, high velocity cooling system uses a combination of a circulating pump and sea pump to keep the engine at an optimal operating temperature and peak performance.
Innovative dry-sump engine lubrication reduces friction and adds horsepower for improved overall boat performance.
Balanced steel crankshaft.
Forged-steel, 100%-machined connecting rods and custom Mercury Racing aluminum pistons.
My '67 F100 LB with a 360 and 4.11s in the rear feels scary fast off the line, but runs out of breath about 55mph. That could be part of the story is the torque and gearing in some of these trucks.
Sorry to BS all of you with marine engines...just thought you might find some interest in it...one guy mentiones anchors and boats and there I go!
Chevy is the only manufacturer that will supply blocks with brass freeze-plugs
Or maybe the only one that will supply a complete long-block in marine trim?
Look at it this way - the way boat motors go (especially in salt-water), wouldn't you like to have a CHEAP Chevy instead of a slightly more expensive Ford ? That way when you blow or rot the darn thing every 2-4 years, it's cheaper ... more cost-effective...
I thought it had more to do with who can supply a reverse rotation motor for left and right hand drives.
There were 351/302s w/reverse rotation, no problem - change the cam and dizzy gear, and I think the small-blocks don't even have a rear-main seal problem with reversed grooves (like the marine 427's).
