I have a '04 Lariat SCrew and the dash mounted coin holder was my first and so far only complaint. It is deffinitely cheezy and, with the "real" coin holder in the flow through console, simply surplus nonfunctional plastic.
I have purchased a Powerpoint identical to the one on the right side of the dash's center console and will be installing it this weekend. Now I am sure most of you are thinking "aren't there enough poweroutlets in the truck already" (two front and one rear)? The answer is absolutely... but having one high in the dash on the drivers side would be convenient as well as having a more symetrical look.
I will try to take a before and after picture and post once installation is complete.
On a side note, since there will be more than enough powerpoints in the truck once this is done, I am thinking of removing the cigarette lighter and replacing it with an OEM pushbutton switch to run additional KC lights mounted on a bullbar on the front of the truck.
I have not begun my search for this switch so if anyone has suggestions they would be greatly appreciated.
If you do not have 4wd there is a "coin holder"> A silly plug which replaces the optional
4wd control. I am sure the truck is prewired for either option.
The only thing I dont like about my coin holder is that the coins you put in it vibrate all the time while on the road and they make a lot of noise.. Anywhere else the coins are fine.. mmm...
I'm thinking maybe a power inverter in place of the coin thingy. Actually, it would be better if the 120V was on the passenger side, so I may move the 12V power to driver's side and install the inverter in its place.
I needed a place to mount an LED for my tailgate switch and didn't want to dril a hole in the dash somewhere. I took the coin holder out and drilled a small hole in it between the coin slots and pressed in the LED. You can't tell the LED is there unless the tailgate is down and the LED is on. Unfortunatly, the 2 wires in the connector didn't have the switched 12V that I needed to I had to get it from elsewhere. BTW, for anyone with a bed or tonneau cover, the tailgate switch works great (you cant' see that the tailgate is down from inside the truck when you have a bed cover). Now, I don't inadvertently leave the tailgate down and dump all my crap in the street!
OK, I bought a 350 watt inverter and took it apart to see how hard it will be to remotely mount the outlets. It should be a piece of cake. The hardest part will be getting behind the console to mount it all up. The instructions say to connect directly to the battery if you are using more than 150 watts (instead of using the cigarette lighter adapter), so I guess I'll hardwire it to the battery with a 40amp inline fuse (also as directed in the inverter instructions).
So the plan is to buy another 12v outlet from Ford and install it in place of the coin holder (the wiring will come from the cigarette lighter). Then put a switch for the inverter directly in front of the console shifter (Lariat). The (2) 110V outlets will then be placed in the center (where the cig. lighter currently is) and symmetrical on the right of it.
The 3-prong outlets have 105C wiring (didn't say what gauge) into the unit, and 18AWG ground wire. They snap into place real easily once the hole is made for them. I'll take some pics when it's done.
I have the electronic shift 4 wheel drive switch on my Lariat and the coin holder in the center flow thru console so that little thing doesn't apply to me, but I will say I'm a non-smoker and I took out my ashtray and keep coins in there and it works great!
OK I'll be the "ONE" to ask it : "IF" the wires are there for the power 4x4 switch is there a way to connect these wires to a switch & make it work? I too have the 4x4 gear shift on the floor between the front seats & have yet to put a coin in this holder. I have big fingers too.
For those who wish to turn the coin holder area into a more functional space you can just snap out the coin holder with a firm jerk. You will see the 4X4 wires inserted in the back of the coin holder, like a dead end resevoir. The 4X4 plug is easily withdrawn and you can overtape it to avoid electrical contact and just poke it back into the open dash hole.
With the now coin holder you can cut off the cup part of the holder and reinsert it into the dash for a flush mounting. Or you can drill a hole into the now flush coin holder and bolt something of chioce to have it handy on your dash. I personally flushed the coin holder, then with velco attached a piece of metal to the dash so I have a mini-bulletin board for shopping list, maps, reminders. The metal you wish to use is available in any hardware store as little squares of flashing used on houses. Make sure it is not aluminum. A pair of tin snips with a file to sooth the edges works fine. Buy some magnets at Radio shack to hold your material onto the velcroed metal.
There are so many things you can do with that coin holder area on a 4X2 that some suggestions should follow this.
