Howdy, I currently have a solid axle durango on 39's, but by january I will have put 12"front/8"rear chevy leaf springs and 49's on the truck, this D44 front end isnt going to like it much and I figure the rear ford 9" may hold, neither will the 5.13 gears after calculating the needed gears are 6.26 So I'd like to look into building up some one ton axles, however, are 6.17 gears a weak gear even for one ton axles? I'm not going to invest money into a time bomb, so if the 6.17's are to weak I'll either just build a one ton front end with 5.13's and convert the front to 3 link with coilovers, or maybe look into stronger internals for the D44 and possibly the ford 9?
Also, I currently run 5 lug stuff, if I resorted to building up a front/ or both one ton axles is there any way I could keep this stuff? or is the one ton spindle to big to accept the 5 lug hub/rotor? It just makes no personal difference to me whether 5 or 8 lugs are holding the wheel on
In general the lower the ratio the smaller the drive pinion will be. I wasn't aware of a 6.17 ratio reverse cut dana 60 ratio ? never heard of that.
I wouldn't feel safe with 5 lug nuts holding on even a 38" tire let alone a 49"

Maybe where I found the gears at it really wasnt reverse cut. Is there anyway to beef up the internals of this D44? It may not be a smart move but at the same token if it would cost in the vacinity to build up one ton running gear I'd more than likely go that route.
The center section of a dana 44 isn't all that week, its the axles & ball joints that are. You can buy after market h.d. axles, but with tires that big I would be more concerned with the ball joints.
I don't know if a 60 front is the same width as a 44, but I'd bet it's close.

Well I've put brand new ball joints in it, but I thought (or so I was mislead) that D60 knuckles could be put onto a D44 and vise versa? Thats why I assumed the only real upgrade your getting with a D60 is bigger axle shafts and slightly bigger bearings etc.
This truck will be wheeled, but not on a daily basis, and it doesnt see rocks at all, most I climb/crawl is up hills. I suppose it will be something for me to try out. Seems possibly that some upgraded internals may be the meal ticket for me? I talk myself in and out of 49's, all else fails I'll 3 link the front with 38's and let it be.
