I was driving to work this (err... yesterday) morning, along Vasco road between Brentwood and Livermore (those who live around here know that it's one of the most dangerous roads in the Bay Area - lots of fatalities... ).
Anyway, I had already seen a few Highway Patrol cruisers, and a couple with customers... I came around a corner, and I see this white sports-looking car, and some flashing lights, but no Crown Vic. Instead, it's a Camaro! I couldn't believe it, but as I drove past I saw the big "Highway Patrol" letters on the side. I was pretty surprised.
Also, a city near me is now using Dodge Intrepids in their fleet of cruisers.
Has anyone else seen the Highway Patrol using Camaro's?
Over here in and around Michigan/Indiana area they've been using them for a while. In fact, the city where I go to school has at least one Camaro and they've got a couple of Intrepids... they've also got a few Suburbans. They're trying to get all sneaky, which is something I can't stand... they're supposed to serve and protect, not sneak up and ticket...
Here in North Carolina, they use Camaros, Suburbans, Explorers, Durangos and even a couple of Intrepids. However, they do catch a lot of drug runners using the I-95 corridor. Our local force has a couple of older 5.0 Mustangs that they use. I do get a good laugh when one of the Mustangs is placed on traffic control duty at the local high school. Has to be a case of the cop getting his chops busted for something he did in order to get such a "dangerous" assignment!
The OSP…Ohio State Patrol …. confiscates drug vehicles and uses them or releases the vehicle to local Sheriff departments. I see Camaros, Excursions, and Mustangs…. You name it. I have been told the police departments use them for 1 year then off to the auction they go.
I'm pretty sure NJ has a Corvette hidden away somewhere, and I've seen that the midwest states have a lot of these cars they use as chase cars...special upgrades, enhancements and a specially trained driver.
The CHP tried them on 14, south of Palmdale, a while back. I wondered what they did with them. The Camaro sits too low to the ground for use in an area where they have to cross a dirt center median and it sometimes snows. The air dams under the front bumpers were all torn up.
Intrepids and Impalas are an easy sell to local departments that bid cars on price alone. Wait until they start replacing expensive FWD transaxles. Taurus police cars never survived the real world.
the colorado highway patrol has been using camaro Z28's for many years now.
a couple other citys: vail- saab 9000 turbos, in the '90s the frisco police dept had a bunch of taurus SHO's
just about everyone else uses crown vics.
Kansas Highway Patrol has some Camaros, but they are starting to age out and be replaced with Crown Vics again. Back in the early and mid 90s they also ran "box" style Mustang coupes for a while.
And the troopers really don't like them....
ANYTHIING less than a crown vic is a beating to them if you need to stay in it for hours and hours and hours !!!
Around my neck of the woods they use suburbans and have started to get monte carlos (yech )
Up here in the North Western part of NC, we have mostly Crown Vic's, but in the mix you have some Camaro's and Mustangs. One Camaro though is running a chip & Nos,and whatever else , supposed to be able to catch "Crotch Rockets." Funny thing is the guy has done blew the car up once trying to catch one, and I figure he will do it again. Up here most cops dont even bother chasing them anymore lol. Also used to be some 5.0's around , but havent seen any lately.
