Question Variable Valve timing advantage?

It would seem the VVT would make for better economy, besides power. Anybody have any comparisons on '05 fuel mileage vs. earlier 5.4s w/o it?

As I rub my magic crystal ball, I see ... ONE mpg! LESS! Or is it more?

Just kidding, but you get the idea - it's 5.4 liters, about the only thing that may help MPG is exhaust back pressure but we all know they have to have some, there is a noise limit. The key is that the motor can get MORE air/fuel making more power. And using more gas. The less back pressure, sure the less resistance on the exhaust stroke, but also, the more air it can ingest in the intake stroke, thereby using - you guessed it - MORE GAS.

I think it'll be a toss-up, and hopefully, it will get the same MPG but I doubt it will improve much.

They get better mileage than the 97-03 5.4's. They are more efficient and more powerful at the same time. The VVT along with the flaps in the intake to increase velocity at low rpm's really helps torque. This means less pedal is needed to accelerate so less fuel is used.

Less pedal doesn't mean better mileage, just more air/fuel making it into the cylinders on lower throttle openings. And didn't the VVT go to "fly by wire" throttle so comparing the two is pointless, isn't it?

Not that I doubt the MPG gains you say, but I still think it's going to take the same fuel to move the same weight with the same displacement...

How MUCH better mileage?

My 01 5.4L 4x4 gets around 14mpg. My friends new 04 4x4 5.4L (both with 3.55 gears) gets 17.5mpg. That adds up over a year @ $2.00 a gallon!!

That is true about the drive-by-wire TB. But it must be more efficient. 3.5mpg is a 25% improvment!!!
