engine rev

hi all

i have a 2001 f-250 5.4 with 91k miles that when u start it the engine revs up to around18-19000 rpm then slowly goes back down to normal. it will do it each time you start. none of the garages from here will even take a look at it without a check engine light on. has anyone had this problem & fixed it??

thx

mike

Welcome.
I would try cleaning the IAC first, it could be sticking.

If the engine were at 19,000rpm it would be in pieces! You must mean 1800-1900rpm I hope.
Actually that is normal for a cold truck. About 20 seconds at 70 degrees and a minute at 20 degrees F. outside temps. It then idles normal correct? at about 700-750rpm.
