Well Hey! I hope I'm welcome in this group, a buddy just bought a 1985 ranger with a starter problem. Turns the engine over just fine but sounds like steel skiddin down the highway when he turns the key. It's a 2.8 V6 I believe with a 5 speed.
First, I would check to see if it is securely bolted to the block. Over time one of the bolts could have possibly backed out a little bit.
If that's fine, the starter gear may be sticking and isn't disengaging from the flywheel as it should. In any event, I would reccomend replacing the starter rather risk having it completly lockup engaged to the flywheel and risk stripping teeth off of the flywheel ring gear or worse.
I'm guessing my the starter on my 99 is different, but I had that sound as well while under warranty. The dealer replaced the starter and it's been fine.
even b4 you get a new starter, make sure the starter solenoid is hooked up correctly, mine was making that noise and i found out i hooked up the solenoid wrong! hope this helped
quack
I guess I should have mentioned that he put a brand new, lifetime warranty starter in the truck but it makes the same scraping sound as the old one which bench tested poorly. Said he looked at the ring gear and didn't notice any messed up teeth.
86 ford ranger 2.9L 5 speed and I have the same trouble. Sounds like WW4 when trying to start. And that's with a replacement starter (rebuilt)! I had a friend tell me that he went through 6 rebuilt starters before finally getting a new one directly from Ford that worked.
My old starter had started doing the same thing (started grinding intermittantly and then all the time) and is why I replaced it to begin with. I checked the teeth (looked ok)and looked for shavings (found none) in the housing when I switched the starters out.
Is there ANYWHERE you can buy a starter OTHER then directly from Ford ($$$) that should work on this?
I'm far from being rich and can't afford to "grind teeth" on this trouble.
Oh, I replaced the starter relay also. And, just to verify,
I have the battery and other various leads going to the large bolt closest to the battery,
The starter cable goes to the only other large bolt.
The blue/red wire goes to the small bolt marked "S"
Nothing goes to "I"
Thank for your help and everyone is right...this site ROCKS!
