hello i recently bought a 1987 ford bronco with a ford 302 cui in it. i am taking automotive courses at the local community college and have taken the engine out for dissassembly and a rebuild. i am wondering what i should do ?? right now i just want to replace worn or broken parts new manifolds and turn it into a 337 or 342 stroker . would anyone recomend anything different? should i drop a 351 into it? looking for high power and good fuel economy. i dont have a tight budget either.
I wish I had your problem. If it were me I guess I'd drop a 351 but stroke it out as high as I could go. New computer, new rearend, upgrade brakes, driveline, tranny, etc... Or you could leave the 302, port match the manifold-heads-exhaust-header-high flow exhaust. Maybe a new improved upper intake, but remember. You have speed density computer system controlling everything and it's not very forgiving towards upgrades. But it would be fun to do.
351w swap all the way. i did it last summer and was best mod i could have done. plenty of grunt (which is very important) and my mileage actually improved over the 302. stroking is kewl but requires a lot of work to the efi system . if you have questons about the swap let me know
thanks for the responses. i am gonna look into getting a 351 block after talking to my teacher. i might stroke it anyway i have a good bit of time till i start reassembly and for the truck to be on the road. also would i be able to use a superchip to upgrade my computer or should i look into replacing that??
mass air is what you will need if you stroke. it can be done with out but personally its more time then its worth. go here www.fordfuelinjection.com he can hook you up with mass air for a good price.
good luck sounds like a sweet project. by the way you gonna go 393 or 408. thats about max in my book
late
They just did an episode, (rerun), where they stroked a 302 out to a 350 for about 360HP, and were putting it into a old style Bronco. I think its called Project Crazy Horse. You may be able to get a couple of ideas there without having to buy another block.
those guys are funny, personally i would never stroke a 302 block past a 347. any more and your asking for issues with the cylinder walls being to thin
If you do the 347, the side loads get a little high on cylinder walls. The longevity of these is thus limited when compared to 351. The 351 just weighs more but has much higher rod ratio and less side loading.
The 393 is the least costly stroker utilizing the 351 and still has better rod ratio than 347.
