I originally ordered a LEER shell with my '05 but have seen 2 on the road since. Both have had an interesting overhang over each side of the rear portion of the bed. It's most noticeable when looking from the side but about 1/2 car length behind. On either side of the rear shell window, the shell sticks out about an inch beyond the bed portion of the truck above where the tail lights are and then it juts down another inch or so below the highest level of the bed. I wish I had a picture.
I currently have a LEER and wanted to stay with them but I have not been impressed by this "new" look, almost like the shell is too long for the truck.
Has anyone else noticed this? Is this LEER's new look?
All the ones that I have seen fit perfect... I have not seen what you are describing yet.
I still have a leer from my last truck (a 94 f-350) and painted it to match my current truck (02 f350). It doesn't fit perfect, but it gets the job done. I have been amazed at the leer's quality over the ten year period... nothing wrong with it to date. 90% of the time this camper sat outside too... it was only used for about five winters or so...
...I say talk to leer, see what they say, although I have never tried another brand you really can't poopoo their high quality Good Luck.
I'm definitely not poopooing LEER quality. My current LEER shell is 12 years old, has had holes drilled in it for custom racks, has had me up on it many times even with the racks loaded in subzero weather, has been to just this side of the arctic circle and back, and has been offroad countless times, and still looks (almost) like the day I bought it. Not even a squeak or rattle and all I've had to do was replace those shock-like gizmos that hold up the rear window. Heck, I don't even have underwear that old, well maybe a couple pair.
Don't get me wrong, I'm a huge LEER fan, just a little concerned about a vulnerable-appearing and not-so-great looking new design, that I can't see on their website.
We must have posted about the same time. That shell in that link fits perfectly and is not what I saw on the other 2 trucks. I hope that mine will look as good and not have that overhang.
I have a Leer on my 04 and I understand what you mean about the overhang but my overhang isn't more than 1/2". The only problem that I have had with my cap is that either the cap or the sides of the bed flex enough that the bars from the handles wedged themselves between the door and the door frame. I had to climb in the bed through the slider and disassemble the latch assembly to open the glass. I added an additional clamp and pressed the sides of the cap closer together and it seems to have solved the problem.
I bought a Leer XL100 for my new 2004 F250. My old truck had a Snug-Top on it for about 10 years. The Sung-Top was a great top, solid built, paint held up. Of course over the life of the top, the door hardware became worn, but any top will slowy wear here (latches, locks, gas-struts). When I was looking for a top for my new truck, I looked at Sung-Top first. The local dealer wanted $2000 for a basic top before any options.
I then looked at the Leer brand. They started at $1250 before options, and had a better option package. I was able to get it built the way I wanted it, install, tax everything for $1816. (Has liner, Yakima racks, fold down, sliding window, custom lighting, matching paint). As far as comparing the Leer brand to Snug-Top, after having both, I'm not sure the Snug is worth the extra $700. My Leer seems to be a lighter weight build than my old Snug-Top. The roof was alot more flex in it, and it is much louder when driving (has a "bass drum" noise over bumps). My old Sung was alot more solid in the roof area, and didn't flex around like this new top. Fit and finish on the Leer was not as good as the Snug-Top, but I can live with few minor imperfections in the top.
I took a few pictures of the rear of the top, but I can't them to download here. The rear does slope down over the taillights, but it fits the lines, and looks good. It does not stick out, only curves down, following the lines of the truck. My dealer had to redrill the factory holes in my top to get it to line up correctly, and the install looks good (top is held on by clamps). It looks as good, if not better than all the other tops I've seen on the Super Duties. Hope all this helps out.

(Edit) Posted a pic of the rear Leer top in my new gallery.

Hey Bug Splat: Your's looks right, and there is no gap. The 2 trucks I saw were crews, so I wonder if the crew versions are just a tad too long -- I don't know. Thanks for the info re: snugtops.
After all that, I discovered that my garage is barely tall enough for my shell-less truck. Because the back end is higher than the front, I think that a shell would be the last straw to being unable to pull into my garage. The clearance is close enough right now that if there was even an inch of snow packed down in the alley in front of my garage, that I won't be able to back in.
New house will soon be followed by shell purchase, maybe this summer. Life without a shell though is rough - first time in over a dozen years. I'll let you know.
