I plan on refreshing my engine this winter.
It runs fine but uses a little oil and i know it needs a head gasket. has lots of power. no blow by
I have to do the head gasket and put new mains in it and i was wondering while i had the head off and the pan off why not put rings in it. Can i do it without honing the cylinders?
No, the new rings will not seat properly, if it doesn't use an excessive amount of oil now and the blow-by is reasonable leave them be.
If the oil consumption is excessive, let's say more than a quart per 1,000 miles, don't mess around with it, do a total rebuild.
If you're planning on a Head rebuild, go for the rings. I've seen it repeatedly, a valve job done on a high milage engine and the rings go soon after. An engine rebuild kit isn't that expensive (mine was $350.00), machine shop costs can exceed the cost of the kit in many cases.
The only way to know for sure is to measure the cylinder wall taper. If skirt to wall clearance is acceptable (0.0015" to 0.0025") and there is less than .001" taper in the cylinders, then break the glaze with a drill mounted hone, and put in new rings. If the taper or cylinder wall clearances are out of spec, then machining and new pistons are in order.
