I have heard that these truck are notorious for noisy power steering pumps
But it still drives me nuts. Has any one tried replacing stock pump with somthing
else.
Noise in a power steering system is caused either by air, or wrong fluid. I'd check some other posts there is a a way to "purge" the air from the system but forget the procedure. You could also try running power steering fluid instead of Type F trans fluid.
I've found that the ATF is quieter, but if it's unusually noisy (some of fords, not all, ps pumps are able to be heard moving around parking lots or parallel parking...but thats about it). If it's louder than that...most likely some dirt got into the pump and it'll whine from that. Dirt is awful on a PS pump...so you might need to replace it if it's excessively loud. My buddy's PS pump is loud enough that I can hear it coming down the street but it needs to be replaced.
I replaced the Red fluid (that was in it when when I bought it) with a
synthetic PS fluid and it didnt make any difference. It is not extreemly loud
its mostly in parking lots and such. I talked to a couple different part places
and they said it was typical and a new pump probably would not be any better.
I've seen alot of whiners (pumps specifically) and some noise is not unusual at idle or at very low speeds (IE parking lots). Air in the system and dirty fluid can cause this quick. If it goes away at above 15 MPH it's fairly normal. If it's still there above this try flushing the system first. I've done this on several vehicles and more or less cured the problem. Power steering fluid should be changed every 10,000 miles or 12 months just like your transmission fluid and filter.
I replaced my noisy pump(it was leaking, but I kept it full) and it was cheap and it's quiet. So if you're willing to drop about $35 at Autozone. It's worth the risk.
to purge the system of air you need to pull 15" of vacuum on the pump while turning the wheels from lock to lock for 3 minutes. You repeat the process untill there is no foam in the reservoir. be sure you have the front tires off the ground. i put a new pump on my truck and did this procedure. its nice and quiet.
