My wifes '86 Bronco II has a problem that's driving me nuts & leaving her stranded...When it's cold, it behaves fine but after a 20 mile drive into town it'll start coughin' & fartin' on take-off. If shut off for a few minutes then started again, it'll will not run at more that an idle. But if left for an hour or so, it'll be good again. What's up ??
TFI stands for Thick Film Ignition module. On the 2.9L engine, the TFI is located below the distributor, behind the intake manifold. It is a computer chip about the size and shape of a harmonica. If you have a different engine, or are unsure how to change it, get a shop manual. For your info...the TFI costs about $90.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 23-Aug-02 AT 03:38 PM (EST)]On the price of the TFI don't freak I just got one for $30. the tool was an extra 5 or less. Guess it depends on where you live and all.
P.S. careful not to loose the screws.
Just to be sure I have this right -- the module is located ON the distributor ?? With a wiring harness plug-in on it ?? Thanks, folks, I appreciated the advice !!
sounds familiar, I had this problem and ended up the thing dies completely one day, the wire to the fuel pump had worn through under the master brake cylinder of my 88 bronco 2. tough to find but it solved my woes.
Good luck
Fran
Usually the TFI module (which is basically the only weak spot on the 2.9) and there is no difference between a $30 and $80 module in terms of reliability. Except price.
In rust belt states that salt the roads, you will find the terminals on the rail fuel pump rot out and by wiggling the wires you can test the connection. If you can gently pull on the connections and have the wires come out, you already had a problem. You can solder them back on, but, for the $80 for a new pump its not worth the time and bother becaue you probably have over 100K on the truck already. I fixed mine and then went out and bought a new pump ASAP.
