ok guys need some help i dont no anything about this engine i only run 351m-and 400--so here gos i found a 71 351w 4-barrel says it runs very good havent went to look or here it run yet how much hp-torque it has and would this make a good engine for a 1977 f-250 4/4 with 3.54 gears and 4-speed trany whit granny 1st---the guy says its in a 1971 LTD did they make a 4-barrel in that model year LTD SORRY for the long post --thanks guys
ok first the cam would need changing because it meant for a car. now for the really sucky part. your truck never came with that motor so finding the towers that bolt to the frame are not existent. i tried this with my 73 ford highboy a few years back and got rid of the 351w because of it and went to a 390 which in my mind is way better then the 351m/400 anyday. there is also more aftermarket for the 390 as well.
It would be a good motor for your truck, should have decent heads on it, but yeah, you might want to change the cam. As for mounting it in your truck, 302/351W/351M/400 towers are all the same, you just need a set of truck 302 motor mounts. What engine is in the truck now? You will probably need to change the bellhousing and clutch on the tranny to complete the swap.
I have a 351W in my 76 f-150 4x4 it was a pretty easy swap. All you need is 351m/400 motor mount perches (ford never put a 302 in a 4x4 in the 70's) , The hole will need enlarged slightly but that is all. Next you need a bellhousing from a 300 six and you will be readdy to roll.
are you sure about this, reason i say this is because his frame may be wider or narrower which would create a problem thats at least why i couldnt use the 351m mounts in my 73
