We have several dictionaries, but probably 1/3 or more of the words I look up are not in there. I read a lot and like to look up any word I am not totally sure of. Because I have been reading and looking up words my entire adult life, the words I look up tend to be unusual or rarely used words. Sometimes, they are derivatives of foreign words or phrases. We do have a hardcover Webster’s 3rd New International in the living room and that one is a little better when I can use it. But….It is so large and heavy that it is not practical beside the bed, in the truck, camping etc.
Anyone have any ideas? Is there a dictionary that has obscure, lesser used words and foreign derivatives and leaves out the majority of common English words that I would never have to look up?
You may want to look into the portable electronic ones that are available. Some are more comprehensive than others. I don't know about cost, but if you use it a lot, it might be worth the extra money to get a loaded model!
A couple of very interesting sites there. I did not find what I am looking for, but I will explore them further. I want a book form dictionary that has all the unusual words without the common ones. Online is great when I am on the computer, but I want to take it with me and also have a copy beside the bed.
Well, I searched through those sites and did not find what I wanted. Some of the online and electronic have 200,000 or more words. I have a couple of text dictionaries with close to that, but they still often don't have the words I want. What I need is one with say, the most uncommon and least used 100,000 words. May be a market there for a publisher of dictionaries.
Thing is that a big coffee table dictionary with 500,000 words probably contains 300,000 words that the average person would never need to look up. (like all the words in this post). A well read person would probably never need 400,000 of those words. If I could take a dictionary with 600,000 words and edit it to only the 200,000 less common words, I would have exactly what I want!
