I have an 02 explorer xlt in white with grey molding. I would like to accomplish the look of a limited by painting the plastic panneling that goes around the vehicle the same color as the body. Has any one tried this? Any one know if it works? It looks like the plastic is different than the limited though - not shiney.
I've never seen paint stick to plastic very well--always chips. If any protective chemicals have been used on the plastic like Armour-All, it will be near impossible to prep it right.
If you do decide to try painting the plastic, make sure you sand the plastic and use a plastic primer for the first layer. Don't use an acrylic paint as it will surely chip. You will need to use a proper plastic paint that will flex. Go to a good paint store for recommendations.
If I were making the change, I would pull the trim off an Explorer from a junk yard and replace rather than paint.
I had a plastic bumper painted once...it was a black plastic, similar to the trim on our X's. It was done at a body shop that I trusted. As far as I remember, I didn't have any problems with it.
