so on my '04 4.6L F150, while doing the first oil change, I noticed a small plastic deflector right under the oil filter. I assume it's there to catch any oil from the filter, at the time of replacemtn, and direct it away from the front axle. my problem with it is that to get my hands in there and get the filter off I have to remove the plastic thing.
so i have done my second oil change today, and had to go through and remove this piece again. my oiil change takes about 20 minutes longer now, b/c I have to take this piece off. so this time, I didn't put it back on.
I have changed my oil 7 times so far (23k). I have yet had to take the plastic piece off. Do you do this to get the filter off or to put the new one on. If off, just use a filter wrench that fits over the end of the filter, a 3/8" ratchet and about an 8" extension. This is on a 5.4, but I don't think there is that much difference with oil filter placement.

I have changed the oil on my 4.6 3 times and haven't had any problem with the plastic thing. I always come in from the top to loosen it with the filter whrench and then unscrew by hand from the bottom. I like this feature since the oil drains into the pan instead of all over the crossmeember.
I have the 5.4L. I changed oil for the first time last week. Although I don't have to remove the plastic deflector, I ran into problems when I asumed that the oil would run down the deflector. After positioning the oil pan below the deflector, I spun off the filter to find that the oil stream runs straight down onto the floor without a drop hitting the deflector. Next time, I'll put the pan directly under the filter and ignore the deflector. Anyone else experience this or is my deflector positioned incorrectly?
I think the "deflector" might be a type of air-dam to help get air up to the filter for extra oil cooling. I do not think it is ment to guide the dripping oil. You're right, the oil falls straight down on my 4.6 as well.

It is a channel for the oil. I have the skid plates on mine and it directs the oil directly thru a hole in the skid plate. You will get some oil behind and in front of the axle, depending upon how carefull you are pulling the filter. Most of it comes down behind the axle.
I never thought of it directing cool air toward the filter. If you look closely at the detail at the front, it is made to channel liquid into a small portion of the plastic. It could be there in case additional oil pours from the filter as you're removing it from the truck. It's a nice thought, just deceptive the first oil change. I've had bigger messes on the floor that that before.
