I have an 87 F-150 with a 300 I-6. It has a single core radiator and I'm looking for somthing bigger without doing alot of mods to change to a 3 or 4 core. how big can I go? Is an oil cooler a good way to keep engine temps under control?
Most any radiator shop should be able to take your radiator and install and new 3 or 4 row core in it. Some parts stores even offer a new replacement with more rows than oem.
Is yours starting to overheat? Are you sure it's the radiator? Has it been flushed and fins cleaned recently - that will help a lot.
A oil cooler will reduce the temp of the engine, but should not be necessary on a daily driver, they are mostly used for tow and performance vehicles.
I have an 18 foot travel trailer that I tow every so often. normally on the Oregon coast where there are not temp extremes. I did have an occation to travel inland where the temps got to 85 or so, and I overheated the truck. I boiled out the coolant. I stopped before things got out of hand, so no damage to the engine. I have had an ongoing problem with the starter. It gets heat soaked and will not spin the engine. Ive yet to put bigger battery cable, but I'm thinking that the engine is running hot, even though the dash gauge says different.
With the towing you do, a thicker radiator would be a good idea. Might want to get a thermometer or aftermarket guage to compare to the dash guage - just for peace of mind. Larger battery cables will make a big difference, be sure to replace ALL the cables with bigger ones... This starter may be ruined from heat and small wiring, might need to be replaced - consider installing a heat shield to protect it from the exhaust heat.
