Subwoofer location

Hold the presses, one of my co-workers just demonstrated a cheap ($49) stereo w/ CD he picked up at Wal-Mart. It had pre-outs and he hooked it up to a self-powered sub box placed under his seat (older model Dakota) and used the stock speakers (4). It sounded plenty good for my needs. I'll for-go new front tires and go this route instead. The truck I'm working on is nothing more than a weekend tinker toy and thanks to a colossal mortgage, I can't justify spending much on it. Thanks for your input.
