Favorite caliber...

well, from the number of people that I have seen the past few days talking about various weapons...I decided to ask this question.

What is your favorite all around caliber and why?

if you have more than one, then don't let me stop you from talking about them.

However, please don't let this get into a "this one is better than that one" deal.

Well....seeing as how I asked the question, I will tell you what my two favs are.

Both ends of the spectrum....I like the .223 for its availability and rather ease of reloading and getting some terrific accuracy with my 12" TC.
It can be used on anything from prairie dogs to coyote.
Second is my 45/70 Govt. Not only is this round a piece of history for the US, but it can be loaded down for my 13 year old daughter to shoot, or loaded up to take down anything up to and including some rather dangerous game. All of this out of a 16.25" barrel I shoot as a pistol. Again, its a TC, so this is somewhat of an unfair advantage.

My favorite is also the .223. I like the .45ACP in pistols.

either a .303 British, or a H&R .45-70, for whitetails,
.38 special with handloads for home defense, and killin' critters that wander in the yard (had a go with some rabid raccoons last summer)
I'd like to get a .223 sometime, seems they're rather versatile...

I used to hunt ground squirrels with my Remington 700 in .223. 100 yards was no challenge. I shot from 200 to 300 yards.

what you guys doin with them little bitty guns? in pistol i have everything from .17 cal, [ old remington], to 50a&e, thats my favorite.

in long guns i have about 200, so its a little rough to pick my fav., but i will try. i guess the 223 is about the best all around for me, but my 460 wetherby, and 458 win mag will do anything i ask, as long as it doesnt include being quiet or not hurting me!

I have an M1 Garand in .30 and a K-98 Mauser in 8x57, both great long range rifles.
As for hand-guns, .45 ACP all the way!

.45 ACP, .30-06, 12 gauge (if that really counts as a "caliber," which technically it doesn't )

And now you won't be allowed to own one as you're in California!

A buddy of mine just told me that one of the .50 BMG long range rifle manufacturers has offered a deal to California citizens that they can purchase a registered action/receiver, unfinished, between now and the date the new law goes into effect, for about $1000. At any time in the future you can send it back to them and they'll finish the work to build the rest of the gun for about $1000 more.

A really good deal! There's not many times you get a "last chance" like that.

I don't know which maker was offering that, but you could find them through Google, I'm sure.

30 Carbine - Very good to go to the range and shoot all day!
7 mm Rem Mag - I can load up to 200 G and down to 110 g and have alot of fun at 200 yds
9 mm - in a model 39 smith, it is just fun to plink a 50 feet!

BUT - My overall favorite is a .17 cal air rifle! At 950 feet/Sec and 4 power scope shooting 9mm cases (empty) at 40 feet. Shoot all day, no recoil, nohearing loss and just fun! They did call this "mini sniping" It is reported to be she same as 200yds with a rifle!
