"Social" caliber, .45ACP (never need an excuse that way)
All around - .22lr
Hunting - .35 Remington - out of my T/C. Someday I'll find a Remington pump action in .35 Rem that isn't gold plated.....
I didn't start to read this thread because I knew the favorites would be all over the scope but had nothing else to do so I started. Then I got to this post. I didn't notice the name of the poster but thought on reading it that this guy has got to be some old fart. Then I checked his name.... I cracked up..... .. BTW. my favorite Pa. deer gun, and my first, was a Marlin Mod. 336 in a .35 Rem..New cost, $75.00. I carried my Win. Mod. 88 in a .308 for elk. I like levers. The .223 makes a good lead burner in various semis or one to shoot clover leafs in handloads through the Ruger #1. Truthfully, all calibers are my favorites except the ones that gives brain concussions and dislocated shoulders to the shooter. They're not fun for me. I have a buddy that has the Remington pump but neither me, the Lord, nor the Devil couldn't pry it away from him.
Sign me, just another Old Fart.....
another post by me:
If I had to have a single weapon with which to save my life with it would be a H&K Mk23 .45ACP Pistol. Rugged, reliable, huge and a tack driver. 2-inch hole at 50 yards, big enough to scare away anyone in their right (and sometimes left) mind.
Deer hunting:
30.06 on a stand or still hunting.
12 gauge with the dogs,
44 mag. just in case,
Squrlles,Rabbits:
12 gauge,
410/22 o/u,
Self defence:
44 mag,9mm.
My favorites are the .357 and .44 mags in single and double actions (Ruger only, S&W are too thin-wall and too light for me), 10 gauge semi-auto and .460 Weatherby. These are all nice to shoot and get the job done the first time.
I have a 25-06 that I like a lot. Load 70 grain bullets for varmits and up to 120 grain for larger game. I have taken two elk with it. One of the most versatile is the 30-06 because of the wide variety of bullets you can buy to reload.
7.62X39 for pretty much anything, from coyote to deer to plinking. Hard hitting, dirt cheap and low recoil. For longer ranges my favorite by far is the 6.5 Swede.(6.5x55) Flat shooting, low recoil and ballistics nearly identical to the .308
The .375 in a pistol, that would be a .444 Marlin case necked down to .375 in a 14" barreled Competitor by Competition Arms, a break open single shot. What were you thinking a .375 rifle load in a pistol? Also 9mm, .357, .41 and .44 for pistol. For rifle the best or biggest bang so far is a friends 20mm rifle from wwII that you fire prone off a bipod, not a field gun but it will reach the field.
