I know Bronco 2's are pretty tippy.. but, I was wondering, how much tippier do they get with lifts? I wanna mount some 31x11.50's, and I know I'd prolly need a 3" lift. I wanna go for suspension lift.
Anyway, I was just wondering how much tippier that will make it.
Sudden movements at speed are your greatest enemy. I had P235/75r15 tires on one of my BIIs with a 2" body lift. I was doing 55 on the highway when boxes fell off the back of a truck. I went to avoid them and two wheels started to come off the ground so I decided to just plow into them (6x3x 1/4 steel bumper). It was very scary. Wide is a good idea.
Though at low speed (<20 mph) they are stable enough to whip them around curves and corners in mud/dirt.
I think the main thing to remember here is drive it like a truck not a sports car. I have 6" of lift and I have never had any problems. the way people get in trouble is they don't put in to account that they are in a truck with an altered suspension. the fact that it is a truck should make you slow down anyway. People give the BII a bad name because they say it is the worst, but I got news for them any SUV has a high center of gravity so how are they so possitive that the BII is the worst?
a good rule of thumb if you go higher go wider! it will make the truck more stable in turns. if you realy want to kill some more body roll get double shock mounts, a stearing stablizer and leave your sway bars on.
just my .02
I agree with CHOPPEDBII. I have 235/75/15's on my B2 with no suspension modifications and I have had no trouble whatsoever. I would definately go wider though if I was to get a lift. And as for the B2 being the worst suv at tipping, anyone who has ever driven an isuzu trooper, mitsibishi montero, or land rover KNOW that that is far from the truth. Some of the earlier monteros actually even had a factory installed level-type guage that warns the driver when he is about to tip...I have driven one of these rigs and TRUST me it does not take much for you to feel how off balence they are. Don't get me wrong...they are all nice rigs, I just wouldn't take them out on the trails. Any suv is obviously going to tip easier than a car, you just have to adjust your driving style. Anyway, that's my 2 cents worth.
First of all guys, the Bronco II is one of the most stable small SUV's I've ever driven. Compared to the Blazer, Pathfinder, Trooper, Tracker, and Samuri, these things are a sports car. They were built with rigid suspention to handle the road. I have had at least one of all listed above and my BII is the best by far.
Note: If you raise the center of gravity without making the vehicle wider and longer, you increase the chance of a roll. What I would be worried about is the drivetrain. Do you have the auto tranny? If so, keep in mind that it's weak and will burn up under the stress of taller tires. I have 225x75x15's on mine and I have gone through 2 trannys. 33's are a lot of weight to turn.
However, if you're gonna do it, go with the wide tire as well as tall. You may not be able to make it longer, but you can sure as heck make it wider.
