Any ideas on how to definitively diagnose a faulty fuel pump before removing the fuel tank? Any other ideas on why I'm not getting fuel, relays and inertia switch seem o.k. the van has 140,000kms.It's a 1988 Ford aerostar 3litre, 5 speed.( which is for sale )
Can you hear the fuel pump buzz when turning the key forward from the off position? Turn the key forward but not far enough to start, you should be able to hear the pump buzz then it will stop after a little bit. Have you changed the fuel filter?
Micheal,
The EEC IV / Self Test connector has a pin that will turn the fuel pump on ... Insert the wire in the proper position of the connector , turn the key to the run position and ground the wire . If the relay , inertia switch and wiring to the pump is fine , you will hear the pump running . The EEC IV / Self test connector pin that you need to insert the jumper wire in , Ill do my best to describe what the connector looks like , It has a total of 6 pins , hold the connector so that 4 of the pins are at the bottom , 2 on top . The pin that is the farthest to the right is the fuel pump test pin ...thats where you insert the jumper wire ... I hope Ive not made this too complicated ?

Thanks Superdave and Paul for your input.I replaced the fuel filter a few monthes ago.I can't hear the fuel pump, but I can hear the relays clicking.Paul, I'm a little confused.Where is the EEC-1V self test pin? Isn't the EEC-1V system the control system which includes the ECA and all the other information sensors. Thanks again for the info,it's much appreciated.P.S. I've heard that the fuel pump may not start buzzing until the engine is running in a high pressure efi system is this true?

Micheal,
Im not 100% sure of the EEC IV / Self Test conector is located on the Aerostars ? Normally , its along with the fuel pump relay , the EEC IV relay . Most are usallly labled EEC. Look for a black plastic box , about 10in long and about 2 in wide , Usually located on the left engine / inner fender area . As far as I know , when the key is turned on , the pump energizes and pressurizes the system , when the engine starts , the pump runs .Some of the pumps are audible even with the engine running ... mine gives a high pitch hum .Good luck .

I've had 3 Aerostars, 88, 93, and currently a 94 and on all of them you could here the fuel pump buzz as it was building up fuel pressure. I assume you have checked the fuses also?
Thanks for the tip Superdave. The only fuse for the fuel pump that I'm aware of,is the one fused link.I'm assuming that's o.k. because I do have power at the inertia switch which I believe goes straight to the pump.I can also hear the relay but no sound from the pump.
About all I know to do now is to establish that you have power to the fuel pump with a test light or volt tester. I don't know if you can spike or hurt anything electrical by doing this though. My Daughter had a 89 Ford Taurus that the fuel pump failed on about the same mileage. Good luck!!
