We just did a tune up on it last week, it was running great, but last night it went to crap. With a normal throttle, it started bucking, missing and sputtering. Take it out of OD and hammer it, it would seem to be ok, but the full potential wasn't there. Take off from a light, cough, sputter and shake the engine like its on three crlinders. You can hear some of the cylinders come in and the go out again. Very erratic. I was thinking along the lines of the fuel filter or water in the gas. If it was the fuel filter, it shouldn't act better when you floor it, it should get worse. If its water, I'm screwed because its a fresh tank of gas. I bought the gas Thursday afternoon, drove it 20 miles or so, and now its bad. Where is the fule filter located on these anyway? The dash isnt lit up, so I don't think its throwing any codes.
Hummmm.....I had the same symtoms from my truck a while back. I thought it was the clutch because the engine ran fine when the clutch was engaged. I replaced the clutch and it still had the problem.
It ended up being the ABS sensor in the differencial housing. Ford said that was a common problem with my 98 but they've seen it in later years. You talk like yours is automatic so the symtoms would be there all the time unlike mine where the drive tran would disengage when I pressed the clutch. Next time it happens but the truck in neutral. See if it stops.
The ABS sensor is a known weakiness in our trucks. The bottom cap breaks off and its the gear in the differencial. Thus making the truck think you are hitting the brakes all the time.
Are the plugs or plug wires loose? Did you somehow loosen the connection to the coil pack? If it's missing then those are about your only options.
I did some dress up on my engine and disconnected the plug to the coil pack. I didn't get it in all the way and after a while it came loose. It started missing terribly and then just died.
Do you have the "Service Engine Soon Light On"? You might not. My truck did the same thing, and i replaced the plugs, the fuel filter, and it turned out to be a coil pack. Mine started doing the "bucking" thing well before the check engine light came on. When it does come on, get the code from auto zone or dealership(auto zone is free). I will bet it will say that you have a cylinder misfire. Replace that coil pack.
