Question 4” Down-Pipe – Resonator Question

Besides the turbo whine, can the lack of a resonator on a 2003 6.0L cause any engine/turbo damage?

I own a 2004 F250 with an August 2003 engine build date. I knew I needed an exhaust with the resonator on the 4” down-pipe, however a local shop made a mistake and installed the wrong one without the resonator.

I drove the truck for 1500 miles until my neighbors ganged up and told me that my “exhaust whine” was waking them up at 5am when I leave for work. This conversation with my friendly neighbors convinced me to look under the truck; that’s when I noticed the problem.

The exhaust whine is hardly noticeable now that the correct down-pipe is installed but I’m still wondering if the resonator does more than just reduce noise.

Sounds like you live in a communist neighborhood.
I don't understand what you mean. The stock down pipe has an assortment of crushed places on it and an insulated cover that reduces the whine some what.
Aftermarket systems eliminate the crushed places in order to increase the flow. The only other items in the system are the catalytic converter and a muffler. Are you thinking the cat is a resonator?

No I'm not thinking of the cat. The resonator is part of the down-pipe and is very obvious from beneath the truck. Now that the 4” down-pipe with resonator has been installed the whine is noticeably less.

Thank you for the reply Tim.

I am running the stock exhaust right now but am looking to upgrade. I like the whistle i think it sounds great. I dont really care about bothering my neighbors. I am really cool with all of them. What do i have to do exactly to get that nice whistle. Do i need a full exhaust or can i just get a down pipe. Any suggestions from the guys with the good whistle would be cool...thanks

The stock muffler is the most restrictive part of the whole system...
followed by the crushed downpipe...

At first, I just removed the stock muffler and put a straight pipe in it...
LOT'S of rumble... but got tiresome and too loud on long drives for my personal taste... (note, I have the X - may be ok with the SD without the echo chamber)
and coul barely hear the f-15 whine since the unmuffled exahust was so loud....

next did the turbo back exhaust without the cat and had a tremendous amount of whistle thanks mostly to the 4" flow thru muffler....

however I wanted the cat in and had it put into the mix and it softened the whistle a bit - just enough to make it the right sound for me !!!!

From: Fort. Lauderdale FL,
Cool thanks for the info, choices choices and the prices are good. Hows instalation. I am handy with the truck i installed the oilguard no prob. Stuff like that. I wont say cant but havent tried to mess with more serious things like taking apart the engine which i know alot of you do. Is this somthing i can install or should spend the money and have a place install. Is there margin for serious error. I have to say im a little nervous about messing somthing up and then having to pay somone to do it right and fix what i did. I know i heard that the down pipe can be kinda tricky.Things like that. Thanks for the info. On another note im down in Fort. Lauderdale florida. No salt on the ground in winter haha. So is it worth the extra money you think for the SS or the Aluminized. Is there a sound difference to the two. Also i see at the bottom the HOG system. is that a better quality part you think for the money. I figure if its far surpirior it might be worth the extra money since your already spending like 500 whats 6. Thanks for all the help.

My $.0000002
it's up to you... it's not a bad install - less than the oil guard...
but
I chose to get a aluminized system cuz I b in Texus....
I chose to let a speed shop put it on cuz $40 was not worth my time and I'm basically lazy
(ok - that was the real reason )

For $40 bucks i would let them as well. But if it was going to be like $100.00 or more i would try it. Thanks for the input. I think i will get it and let somone else install it.
