This is what has kept me from installing one so far. It appears it is a pretty hard job, especially by yourself. The down pipe sometimes requires more room to install than you can get with a jack on your driveway. Alignment is critical so it doesn't rattle on the body, frame or axle.
Stainless looks better. It is up to you to decide if it is worth the difference.

Thank you for the reply Tim.
was the whine really THAT bad without the resonator? i have an 03 and plan on a non-resonated DP and 5" pipe into a single 5.5" stack. i want it to SCREAM!!!!!

The turbo whine (whistle) was too loud at low RPM, even when I was just sneaking out of the neighborhood; I mean in speeds less than 10 mph. The resonated down pipe still 'whines' but just when you get on it hard.

None of the morning walkers are covering their ears when I pass them now. That’s the only thing I miss…the little old ladies shaken their fist at me.

CB--I did mine on ramps in the driveway--unbolted the tranny crossmember and took the stock out in replaceable pieces. Wished I'd had lift access tho--would have been lots easier and probably only taken a couple of hours. I put in the 3.5" downpipe system. It really was a chore and still don't have the alignment of the pipe quite right--one hanger bumps the frame occassionally. The downpipe will come out if you wiggle it just right and the replacement goes in very easily since it's quite a bit shorter than the stock.

As npcc says...
the "extraction" is the real battle....
I did not care about going back to stock and so I told the guy that did mine to go from the bottom and cut it as high as he could before loosening it...

trying to be a nice guy... he tried to take it out whole...
he and another worked on it for 45 minutes before they finally gave up and cut it like I suggested

having done a lot of work for me in the past, he knew I wouldn't be happen if they took too many pieces off to save the stock CRUSHED downpipe...
( I still have part of it and it's amazing what a piece of engineered junk that is !

Where did you get the ramps that are rated for 3,000 plus pounds each? I would like to have some.

The Ford maintenance manual says to remove the crossmember at the trans with a trans jack under it and lower the trans about an inch when removing the down pipe. Interesting.

A sawzall will make a new joint in the pipe in front of the cross member. Most new replacements are short enough that you don't have to mess with the cross member.
