87 f150 tried to pull codes with a volt meter, like it says in the Haines Manual. No engine lite. Got it to sweep once then a click then nothing. Tried different wires. Meter set to 20dcv, meter still works. Truck battery has 12 volts. Any ideas? Thanks
On the connector, there are the four pins in a row, then the two on top. It's the pin on the passenger side that you bridge with the Self-Test pin that is outside of the 6-plug connector. Then just get in and turn the key on.
Saurian, there is no check engine light in the dash on '87 models.
Mike, you need to hold the clutch pedal to the floor during the whole procedure - you might need a helper, or you can try to position the volt meter in a place you can see it from the cab. On top of the cruise control servo worked well for me (if you have cruise).

Do you know where the fuel pressure reg.on 87 F150 4.9? I found something that looks like it on the fuel rail it has a red hose going to the vacuum tree, its under the upper manafold, about in the middle on the pass. side. Is that it? Thanks

Still nothing. The only thing i can think of is the wires from doing the self test touching metal and shorting something out. Still starts. Are there any relays i can check? Any ideas? Thanks
What does the volt meter do now? It could possibly be a bad computer, but I'd definitely check the wiring first - computers are expensive. If for some reason the clutch switch isn't connected back to signal return, it wouldn't allow it to enter self test mode. In the back of the Haynes manual is a wiring diagram - take the harness out of the computer (you'll need a 10mm socket) and then test for continuity between the test port and the computer pins. Also check for continuity to ground on all the wires on the test port.
