I have a 92 F150 4x4 5.0 V8 with the M5R2 and with 4.09 front and 4.10LS rear and the 3.91 first gear in the M5R2 sure seems like a granny--with these rear axles. And it will pull in overdrive at 15 MPH. And still gets 20MPG + at 60 MPH!
for what its worth, I have an 89 F250 (3/4 ton obviously) with the m5od, but I also have the 4.10 rear end and the 302 engine. it seems to be able to take anything that i throw at it, like mild towing and hauling up to full capacity.
but this weekend, i think i may have to have the thing rebuilt. bad sounds, squeals, and a clutch that wont do its job. i would love any insight that others may have in this regard. driving at 75mph, hear an evil squealing sound, pull over, and my clutch wont return to its upright position. i finally got the clutch to work by stomping on it for a few minutes (really!). but now i have a rattling squealing in every gear except fourth. any ideas?

It is probably a bad slave cylinder or throwout bearing. Once you have it apart, just go ahead and replace both of them while you're there. Autozone actually sells the throwout bearing and slave cylinder as a kit for these transmissions.
