2002 F350 7.3 PSD 4x4 CC, stage 2 air ind., 60 hp bullydog chip, 4" turbo back exhaust, no gauges except trans. etc.. At ~2000 rpm in overdrive pulling 12000 lbs. trailer ~70 mph up incline and push on acc. some, get loud swooshing noise, push harder on acc. and get high pitch repetitive swooshing noises. Back off some and noise decreases then stops and power is felt again. Was told it was wastegate. Told to unplug wastegate hose to see if improves, if so get boost control valve. truck runs very well with more quickness and less noise (no load). Was afraid to pull any weight in fear of poss. damage w/o wastegate plugged in. I did order a boost control valve (not expensive) but I read in forum of some unplugging waste gate permanantly. Any ideas?.
I am planning on gauges, I have pulled the same trailer for 3 years with last F350 with the 60 hp chip with no problem w/o intake or 4" exhaust. Pulled same trailer 2 years with this 2002 w/o problem with only 60hp chip. Installed intake and 4" exh. recently. Can tell more power but can hear the wastegate very loud when pushing hard on acc. or pushing with heavy load up grade. Someone said allways there just hear it more due to more air in and out with air ind. and larger exhaust. I thought stage 2 cold air ind. and 4" turbo back exhaust would decrease ETG's.
CURTWALK I have a quick question, does this happen only going up hill with a load or will it do it on even ground after driving for awile, Mine if I drive awile when I go to acclerate the engine sound gets real loud and it seems like it looses power.Im not sure of the cause I plan on putting up a post. Im just curious if your is doing what mine is. thanks Unluckylow
Mine only does it when the engine bogs down abit and I push the accellerator at about 2000 rpm pulling a heavy load. If I back off the acc. a little, the repetitive swooshing noise smooths out to a smooth steady air noise, if I back off a little more it quits. I can run 70 to 80 with 12000 lbs no problem until I hit a hill, then it begins and I have to ease off the acc. a little. It does not do it any other time unless with out a trailer I punch it hard and then let off the acc. I rarely do that. I did pull off and plug the wastegate hose and can tell huge difference with less noise. But I am not going to pull a heavy load with it unplugged until I get more info. I probably need to get a bigger wastegate from banks but cannot spend the money at this time.
I do not know what that is, is it bad? I may add that this does not happen when I turn off the overdrive as I go up the hill with a load. Maybe I should just slow down and not try to keep up with the new H/O Dodges. They run same size trailer as mine 75 mph up 7% grade on I-10 tx. I decided to keep this truck and added air intake and larger exhaust to have same HP/torque as new PSD 6.0 and Dodge H/O 600. Maybe I should have saved the money for trade in on new 1 ton Dodge, they just have less room in 4 door.

yes, turbo/compressor surge. it is when the turbo is spining faster than the air can get through the engine, like when when you let off a little the compressor wheel is still spining at the same speed it was when you were in the throttle. it happens more, and is more noticeable on modded engines. it is not good for the turbo and over time can do damage to it. to help fix the problem you can install a "wicked wheel" compressor wheel or replace you stock turbo housing with an ATS "ported housing". you can do search in this forum for both and find out much more
