my 99 e150 with 5.4 and 45000 mi just started pinging an rattling when i put a load on it. i don't know if it is because i added a k:n air filter or not. it started about a 2000 mi after i added it. i tryed injector cleaner didn;t help. i tryed a tank of 93 oct. gas helped a little but i didn;t need hi octane gas before. any help would be great
I'd really doubt it's the k+n. They don't do much of anything. The quality of the gas seems to be getting worse where i live (New Jersey) so I'm starting to gas up at name brand places. My 5.4 van doesn't seem to suffer but my 4.6 t-bird is pinging alot. Maybe it's a knock sensor going bad. Good luck and report back what you find. -John

Wow 93 oct is to much for that motor. They are only set up for 87 oct. I would say the timeing got out of whack some how.
Try cleaning tha MAF by spraying some throttlebody, intake cleaner on it. Do not touch the little wires, they brake easily. If this doesn't help, the EGR ports are probably clogging up.
I had the same problem and just fixed my 5.4. It was pinging terribly under load and I was getting a code PO140 Insufficient EGR flow. I took the throttle body off and cleaned the ports (they weren't very dirty) but it didn't help. I tested the EGR valve with the vaccum trick and it was ok. I replaced the DPFE sensor (at autozone they didn't know what that was....it's also called a EGR valve sensor, I think). That did the trick. When I took the old sensor off, it had a lot of build-up where the two hoses connect to it so I might could have just cleaned the old one out, but since I had the part I replaced it. Runs great now.
real easy. two hoses that connect to the bottom of the sensor pull off, two bolts holding it to a bracket and one electrical connection. should only take you 10 minutes.

fuel spark timing could be off i run 95 octane in my truck to keep it from nocking and have no over heat problems or anything. but i also have a super chip. and i'm running 95 octane just cause i have to much back pressure and my gas milage and performance is great
