i have a 99 eddie bauer 4x4 expedition with the 5.4 liter engine,my problem is that on hard acceleration or downshifts on hills i feel a shudder or a small roar for just a couple of seconds then it goes away and everything feels smooth again.the transmission shifts very smoothly and doesnt seem to be slipping at all,at least by looking at the tach.has anyone else had this happen? if so any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
what torque converter shudder thing are you talking about, has this been a problem with these trucks, because my noise or shudder does seem to be coming from the front portion of the vehicle.if this is the problem is the only fix a new torque converter?thanks for your help.
If the clutch packs in a torque converter start to go bad, one of the first signs is a shudder feeling on up shifts to final drive, or overdrive. Like Paul C mentioned, sometimes a complete fluid flush can help, but not all the time. It depends upon how you use your rig, and how often you have the tranny serviced...I have my fluid changed each year, and completely flushed every other, unless I gave it a hard thrashing that year, then I will flush it again.
i just got the vehicle about a month ago and now its started doing this,so i dont really know the maintenance history.i think ill go ahead and do the fluid change and see what happens.i dont pull anything with my truck so hopefully this will fix my problem,if not will the torque converter be the only item ill need to replace, and is this going to cause any transmission damage.thanks for your help
Well, when you pull the pan, check for debris in the bottom. You may find a fine layer of a grey or black film on the bottom, this is somewhat normal to an extent. However, large quantities of the same, or even large amounts of a slivery aluminum or other foreign debris spells the beginning of the end. Whatever you do, a complete flush is needed, not a simple filter and fluid change. Try to use a quality fluid such as OEM Motorcraft, or even better something like Red Line, or even Ams Oil tranny fluid. Let us know how it works out...
I had this happen to me in my 99 exp... It was very hard to pinpoint to someone, because it always sounded like driving over the reflectors in the road... Finally I took it to a trans shop and had them do a trans service and ever since then it hasn't done it...They told me they used Ford fluid for 4X4's...So far so good!
