Do all Explorer's ride like a covered wagon? My '94 rides very rough. I can feel everything in the road and going over R/R tracks or decent sized road bumps causes very hard jolts inside. Hard enough to cause the CD to skip. I have put new shocks on it, any other suggestions?
It's not my driving, as the same tracks and bumps feel no where close in my '99 Expedition. Nice and smooth.
What kind of shocks did you put on? I have put Bilstein's on both my Explorers (91 and 95) and they have greatly improved the ride. I've also heard (on this forum) good things about the gas-filled Monroe's. Regardless, the Explorer is built on a relatively small truck platform and will never be as smooth as a car or the larger Expedition wtihout serious modifications. Also, the first generation Explorers (91-94) do not ride as well as the second generation Explorers. Likely, due to the change to torsion bars for the front suspension.
Search this forum for posts on shocks and you should find a number of testimonials on the Monroe gas shocks. You may want to contact the authors before investing in new shocks to make sure they still feel that they are worth the money. I highly recommend the Bilsteins but they are a bit pricey. Since I keep my vehicles for a long time and do most of the work myself I usually go for the best replacement parts, lubrication, etc. I can put on four Bilsteins for less than it would cost to put on cheapo shocks at a repair shop. Good luck.
