Rear Spring Hanger Replacement
Ive had them break right off the frame, and new hanger's be bolted right back up to frame. The ribit's that hold them on are softer steel so they rust out quicker, and this let's hanger bust off.
The hanger can break off, but it won't bend the frame, so don't be worried about that, patch the bed, straighten the frame surface and find some new hangers to be installed on.
My truck has the springs poking up through the bed as well. If it's because your shackles have rusted through like mine have and are no longer keeping the spring away from the bed like they are supposed to, then yes, replacing the shackle with a new one will fix your problem.
You definitely should not have any load in your truck until you fix it. If the shackle breaks off all the way nothing will be holding that side of the axle in place, it could mess up a lot of stuff in the rear and cause you to lose control of the vehicle. I have my axle held in place with chains, so that if it does break off all the way the chains will keep the rear axle from moving too much, but this is only a temporary fix until I replace the shackles.

stengelbros.com has good prices on spring hangers, I know others have posted other sites, but I've replaced both my spring hangers and I went through this site both times. They shift fast, and the prices are decent.

I have to replace the hangers on the 90 Bronco I just bought. Grinding and drilling will be my methods as I don't have a torch. I can get access to a torch if needed. My main question is about removal of the gas tank. Does this need to be done for this job ? especially if grinding or using a torch on the rivet heads. I want to do this myself as I am on a tight budget. Thanks for any advice.
You don't have to drop tank all though it make's it easyer to get new bolt's that hold hanger on threw frame.I don't drop tank's when I do it.Just grind the head of ribit's off and pound remaining part of ribit threw frame.Any question's please feel free.Ive done a million of these hanger's!
I think I can handle that. Your posts in here have helped alot as I am new to Broncos. I will start grinding tomorrow. The wife and kids want to go for a ride with the top off and maybe I can make it happen before sunday. If I have any hang ups I will let you know. Thanks for the help.
Add my thanks to the list. I've been avoiding this job because at first glance I thought for sure I'd have to pull the tank first. I guess I should to get off my butt and take care of it before the weather gets nasty. Just one more thing, will I be able to get everything lined up and reassembled with just hand tools?
Absolutley!Hand tool's is all you need other then a grinder of some sort. You can even use a peice of tie wire around threads of new bolt's,and then pull other end threw hole frame to get bolt's threw frame if you can't reach by your finger's alone.Use lock washer's so it will help hold head's of bolt's when tighting.
This job is being a pain. I have to replace the shackles as well but am having an issue getting the bushing out of the leaf spring. Any Ideas on how to get this out. it is the typs of bushing that has the metal sleeve on the outside.
The easyest way is to take a drill with a 5/16 or so bit and drill the rubber around metal sleeve and then the sleeve will come out,and the take a hammer and flat chisle and knock out the remaining outter sleeve that will still be in eye of spring, and then replace with a poly bushing which is 3 peice so it goes right in.Your local part's store should stock the poly bushing's for the spring's.Hope this way help's.
