Rest Areas.....interstate

I would like to know exactly how is anyone supposed to get any REST at a rest area with all of those LOUD ANNOYING diesel trucks running their engines?
That's why they call it a "REST AREA"......so that I can rest but it's impossible with all that noise. There should be a law/rule that say's that truckers have to keep their engines OFF.
Maybe the truckers should have their own rest areas?

haha, the reason they made the rest areas is so you can get out and stretch your leggs. SLEEP? that is what they make hotels for. unless you are in an RV, but then I can understand your plight!

Give it 10 years--the move is to have a/c and other "must haves" for the cab and driver run by a small APU rather than have the main engine idle.

Of course, there are those in the trucking world who still think it's better to let the engine idle all day or night than to shut it off and restart. A hold over from the days of unreliable electrics and stories about stranded truckers who couldn't start up because of cold weather etc etc.

And, of course, there are those trucks out there that are in such states of repair that they won't restart reliably.

So, more intrusive regulations on the way!!!!! All because of the untidy habits of a few......

One reason that truck drivers don't shut their engines off is that they might have a problem starting them. Most of the drivers in those rest areas get paid by the mile, so they don't want to be held up by any thing. And it would take quite a while in most cases to get some one out to one of those rest areas to work on a rig. All of which would be time that they weren't getting paid for. It would also put them behind on thier scheduled deliveries.

That is why they have TRUCK parking and CAR parking. Usually they are separate enough that the noise should not be any worse than a few hundred cars going by at speed also.

Most idling trucks are either running a/c or heat. Some are using inverters to watch tv or make a meal in the microwave. I'm not sticking up for them, but they have a job and this is part of it.

I guess I'm a more sound sleeper. When/if I do have to use a rest stop...there ain't much to keep me awake!

BTW: in large cities, like NY there IS an idling law. NO more than 5 minute period!! Not sure how well that is enforced at a rest area, but in the city it is.

You got a problem with us idleing our engines so we can be comfortable? So we should suffer just so YOU can be comfortable? It's all about you aint it, screw that driver trying to make a living and ruining your vacation by keeping you awake at night. Damn him to hell for trying to keep cool/warm so he can get enough sleep to stay awake and aware as he's driving his 80,ooolbs truck down the highway that you and your family drives on. How dare he infringe on your sleep like that, the nerve.
Yea, incase you cant tell I'm a driver. 90% of the rest areas have seperate parking areas seperated by the grassy area with the bathrooms and vending machienes inbetween them. You gotta have superman hearing if the engines still bother you while in your vehicle.
As for the other 10%, suck it up or find a differant rest area, cuz I aint shuting down for lil ol you.

Those little ac/heating units are becoming more popular, but still a long ways from being mainstream. I sure as heck wont be shoveling $ out of my pocket to buy one untill the price comes way down.
Trucks that wont start reliably? Not anymore, majority of trucks on the road today (with exception to those coming up from Mexico now) are in good mechanical shape. Sure, some look trashy with busted up bumpers and cracked fiberglass, but are mechanicly sound.

And you thought it would be handy livin next to a Walmart huh

It sucks that you cant sleep in your own house, but understand, truckers need to shop to. Not everything we need can be found in a truck stop, so if I need something and happen across a Wallmart and my 11 hrs is almost up, sure I'm going to stop, do my shoping, then catch a few winks untill I can drive again. Walmart is one of the only retail places that allows us to do this, but not every walmart, some have signs (no truck except deliveries).
In all honesty, we (I) try to avoid parking in a buisness' parking lot because it makes it harder for their customers, even if I park in the back away from it all, pluss it kinda takes away from the image of the place. But sometimes theres not too many choices with the HOS the way they are now more trucks have to shut down for longer. Truckstops fill up fast, rest areas fill up fast, on ramps fill up fast, what's left but large parking lots. Anyways, majortiy of drivers will sleep at a place they can wake up and get some coffe, food, and a shower first thing.

I never wanted to live close to hell*mart but this was better than the place me my mother and sis was staying at when I was 9 or 10. Now I`m 17 with 3 project cars and we need to buy some land in the coutry where I love it .

I'm with you. They don't bother me and to tell the truth I have never even thought about it. Just part of the atmosphere of the rest area. I have pulled into some that didn't have truck parking and they were deserted. It gave me a real uneasy feeling and I left.

If it bothers you, get ear plugs. I could probably sleep like a baby in the engine compartment with the motor running - doesn't bother me at all.
