Well the way I look at it. If a Trucker has driven hours upon hours. He or she deserves comfort. So letting a truck idle is not a big deal. They do not use up much diesel when sitting there idleing. Beieve me it can get hot or cold fast in one of those trucks. So get used to it because trucks have been idleing for years. At rest stops & truck stops. If you can tune out and blank a teenagers music out of your mind. I'm sure you can tune out a truck idleing.

OK....so I struck a nerve.
Sounds like I xissed a lot of truckers off. Look, I pull off into the rest stops so that I can get maybe 20 mins of sleep.....not all frickin night like some people make it sound. Truckers need their sleep as well because I've seen them late at night driving almost in the ditch.....yea they need sleep too. I just think they need their own place to pull over.
The last few times I had to pull over I opted to pull off onto a secluded exit to rest for a few min's and it works out fine, but sometimes a frickin trucker will pull off right behind me to do the same thing ....just turn off your engine if your behind me, ok?
Oh yea, I sleep with a 9mm browning hi-power right there at hands reach so if someone wants a go at it....go ahead. I've had people pull in behind me before (cars) and just idle with their lights on bright (evaluating the situation) then pull away...maybe they just wanted to say "howdy" yea right.
Just thought of something.....they could build a 8 ft wall inbetween the trucks and the cars at the rest stops and I bet that would make a big difference.

It's been mentioned but for idling my truck, I try to only do it when I need to, but I had to deliver a load to an old air base in Arizona once, backed up to the dock, shut the truck off since I wouldn't be in it anyway, and opened the windows, this was at 8am in the morning temp outside was 85deg, it took me approx 45 min to unchain, and unload 3 backhoes, and maybe another 5 to get my bills signed, when I got back into the truck, my inside thermometer read 145deg now how long do you think you are going to live in that temp let alone sleep good, and that was in only 1hr, now think how hot it wouldve gotten after 10 hrs, and the outside temp rising to 115.
As far as the idle laws they have had to write in alot of exemptions, but still not good, I heard that NJ was bieng taken to court on a wrongful death suit, when they found the driver, he was frozen to death, and there was a ticket from a NJ state trooper on the front seat for idling his truck.
And as far as bieng kicked out of rest areas I stopped at one in MI, after less than 2 hrs I was woke up by a trooper, and told I had to keep going down the road I then showed him my log book, showing I was out of hours, and the next truck stop was 2hrs down the road, his response was he really didn't care because that wasn't his problem and I had to get out of the rest area because that was were the lot lizards worked (prostitutes), and I was taking up space, so in essence I was told to drive illegally by a trooper to provide space so the prostitutes could work thier trade.
And as far as everything you have bieng hauled by a trucker, the actuallity of it is more like several, after having this discussion with a lady about why do we need trucks I showed her that she was eating a quaker oats granola bar, and after doing the figuring we came up with 18 different drivers, and trucks at a minimum had been involved with that bar making it to the store so she could buy it, and that was being conservitive, I figure the number is closer to 30+ if you figure every ingredient.
So the next time a truck driver "keeps you awake in a rest area" wait around until he wakes up, then walk up, and thank him politly because without him you would starve to death, and you wouldn't be driving that suv or rv to the rest area to be bothered.
And thats another one that bothers me RVs have the right to park in the rest areas so they can have free overnight parking but us big trucks sure can't park in an rv park. Think about it next time.

All of a sudden you think your royalty? And I dont mean a royal pain either Tell you what, if I see YOU i will pull up and lay on the air horn just to say hi and let you know I will suffer from the heat so you can get some sleep. Screw the rest of the people who could get into an accident if I fall asleep at the wheel. At least YOU get YOUR sleep
